Which surplus rifle?

The K-31 is by far the nicest of the four. Doesn't seem like a "surplus" rifle at all. You can find plenty of soft point ammo online that's appropriate for deer hunting.
The Mosin would be the cheapest option. They're built like tanks, but quality will vary significantly. Adjusting the sights (particularly the front) can be a P.I.T.A, but I'd feel comfortable hunting with mine out to about 120 yds.
Friend of mine has an Enfield No 4 that he's hunted with since he was a kid and loves it. He sometimes has trouble finding ammo.
Sorry, but I don't have any first hand experience with the Arisaka, so I can't tell you there.
Bottom line, I'd go with the Schmidt-Rubin K-31 if I had the choice, but either the Enfield or the Mosin would be a lot of fun.

Buddy's got a K-31 and he loves it.

Why didn't you include Mauser on your list?

thanks Z. and Winchester makes powerpoint ammo for the .303 round.
I watched a youtube vid on someone who sported out and used the action/bolt/receiver and rechambered the barrel to a .30-06 with a K31. I might impulse-buy one from J & G sales .com, are they very heavy? i love my P1917 but its a p.i.t.a. to lug around

I'd guess they probably weigh about the same as your '17 -- between 9-10 lbs. They have a very "solid" feel about them.
That's the first I've heard of a 30-06 conversion.

ah okay. yeah if youre jus carrying it to a sittin spot theyre fine rifles but once u start scoutin in the season totin it around its a pain.
Do they have the pull-out cocking piece safety? those are retarded and I'd never actually use it, hehehe.

i have a mossin. i have never killed with it but i dont hunt with it , i have loaned it to a buddy several times and he has killed several with it. it seems to put the smack down on the deer

i used to be wooddweller3006, but i lost my login stuff and i think i got booted for not logging in for x amounta days. A mosin would be nice...theres one at Franklin Gun Shot for 149 already cleaned out and ready to go
