I like to hunt for coyotes this time of year and have a fair amount of success. I learn a little every time I get out there. I am always wondering which sounds work best. I typically use rabbit distress sounds. I know coyote vocalizations work but seem like they would be better, closer to mating season. I have heard that bird sounds work well. I have a foxpro firestorm and have all sorts of options. I am curious to hear everyone's opinion.

There's no right or wrong answer to your question. What sound works best can change in a instant. I've had them come in and hang up to a cottontail and switch to a fawn and change their mind. I don't think there is a "best" sound. I change up when whatever I'm using doesn't seem to be working on any given day. Kinda like bass fishing.

How loud do y'all usually play the sounds on I have a fox pro but am still very green to coyote hunting

When using my fury I usually start out low and gradually increase. IMO you start low volume in case there is a dog close. If using my hand calls I'll blow them with the FoxPro playing on low volume. That way the hand calls will get them coming and then the FoxPro will keep them coming. As far as sounds any will work but I always end my sets with pup in distress 3. Several times I've been calling with no results hit the pup distress an they will pop out.

I was once told to but the call out 50yards and turn it up till you can barely hear it. I have tried that and it seems to work for me. I suppose if you where in a western state you mite want it loader.

i don't use ecallers anymore, but i have them all. if i had to go back i would use gray fox pup or jackrabbit distress. since so many newbies are entering the sport they tend to gravitate towards ecallers and cottontail distress or pup distress. i think some coyotes are hearing that tune too much
