which scope would you choose?

Going to put one of these on a .270 ...

I've posted before - I have an acquaintance who is good friends with a "high up" at Leupold. She got me an excellent discount on a scope a while back (she got me over 45% off retail), and she is going to get me another. She is getting me the prices over the next couple of days.

I've narrowed it down to these... gun will be used mostly in open field hunting. Not in the woods too often.

VX-3 4.5-14 x 50 (12.2 in, 16.5 ounces)
VX-3 3.5-10 x 50 (12.3 in, 14.7 ounces)

VX-2 4-12 x 50 (12.1 in, 14.5 ounces)
VX-2 3-9 x 50 (12.3in, 13.3 ounces)

I was trying to choose something besides the 3-9x40 or 4-12x40 since I already have a couple of those (one decent one, the others are cheaper). I don't have any x50 and have always wanted one. I know some people don't like the extra height..

I think I'm leaning towards the VX-3 3.5-10x50. I've never owned a VX-3 and am curious if they're much improvement over the VX-2.

the VX III 3.5-10x40 with B&C reticle would be an awesome scope for a beanfield 270 rifle,,zeroed at 250 you should be able to make hits with the reticle at 500 with no adjustments,

if I had a half off deal I would look at the MK 4 3.5-10 with M1 knobs and mil-dot reticle,

You like the B&C reticle? It doesn't really fit my eye. I can see how it'd be useful but it just looks too busy to me.

Of the ones you listed, I'd go with the VX3 4.5-14 x 50. I have the 40mm version of that scope with the CDS, and it's pretty sweet.

I have the 4.5-14 LR/T with 30mm tube 40mm lens B&C reticle and M1 Knobs on a CZ 527 Varmint 223,,with a 20 MOA base I can reach 1,100 yards with the adjustments in the scope,,

it is the perfect scope to bang steel or for tactical use,but it would be a bit much on a deer rifle,

I have no use for a 50mm scope, mounts have to be higher, so you don't have as good of a cheek weld to the stock. You also have the added weight. I know it's not on your list, but a 3.5-10x40 is a nice scope.

If you are getting that steep of a discount, I would see if you could get a VX6. By far the best scope Leupold has ever made IMO.

I think you are talking about the discontinued VX7. Those were waaayyy overpriced.

I would go with the first one because of the extra range power....in a long beanfield you will appreciate that.......been there done that............ :cool:

yep. its not just the weight and bulk of the 50mm, it is the higher rings that are required that seperate the line of bore from the line of sight. Unless a gun had a super high comb, the head position would be too high on the stock. especially if it is a classic style gun with a straighter grip. accuracy will suffer.

the first VX6 I saw was 3-18x44 first focal plane Horus reticle and .10 Mil adjustments,,I didnt even know they made the 2-12 ,or the 3-18 with Duplex reticles ,and now I cant find the 3-18 I first saw.
