Sorting bullets by weight or length (base to ogive)?

I've been sorting my bullets by weight in 1 grain increments. For example, I sort a box a 115 grain bullets into groups of 114.0-114.9 grain, 115.0-115.9 grain, etc.

Wondering if I should not be as concerned with 1-2 grains difference in weight, but concentrate on sorting by the length from the bullet base to the ogive.

If I decide to sort by length, should I sort by tenths, hundredths or thousandths of an inch?

Etreme accuracy is accumulative. The more things done as good as human hands can make them the closer the end goal.

You`ll not notice the things you are doing unless the distance is out past 400 yds.

To be specific, when I sort bullets by length these go into different lots if Sierras as they must use several dies to make bullets. They will be exctly the same but will be several lots. It would be nice if they would run bullets from 1 die and sell them that way, but they mix them together.

Some better boxes will have just 3 lots and life is better.

The JLK`s I shoot I just load them from the box, I`ve cheked them till I`m worn out and they just measure out great.

I use an electric scale for weighing bullets, its fast, and I only shoot exact weights.

I`d batch the bullets and break down the groups in at least 1/2 grain differences.

I only do these for the match rifles, my hunting rifles get fed right out of the Nosler 2nds bag. :cool:

To help with sorting by length you can get a meplat trimmer that will cut the tips back a tad...then sort by weight. The meplat uniformer also helps ensure that each ogive of every bullet contacts the rifling at the same time when fired. That happens because each bullet has the tip trimmed back to the exact same length. Only for Match type Hollow points though.

I`d also like to add, if your bullet weights vary that much, you need to change brands. Thats extreme.
