which direction would you go?

Ok so if i can ever sell my 300 wsm i have now im going to go a little fancier. Im gonna get a savage model 16 with the accutrigger and accustock. My biggest quarrel with myself now is the caliber. I have all the dies and brass for 300 wsm but could sell also, my main deer rifle is a 270 so thats out of the question. I have never killed a deer past 170 yards and. Do not have a shot anywhere possible over 300. Most of my hunting is done in thickets where i will not shoot past 75. Here are the calibers i am considering:

7 mm, 7mm-08, 308, 300 wsm, 338 win.

You're gonna get alot of responses.

I would go with the .308. I know you reload, but you can still find more components for the .308 at a bargain than 7mm-08. I really don't see alot of use for a magnum unless you're just going to see how far you can reach on target. You can use the same bullets you were loading in the 300wsm for the .308 handloads and probably trade for a lot of brass.

Also, if you and the misses have kids someday, they'll have no problem handling the recoil of the .308. JMO

Great caliber. Lots of components, tons of data, plenty of power for those distances. I'm 3 for 3 on one shot kills with mine.

With what information you have provided.............the 308 is the gun you are looking for.

I own a 7mm mag, but when I head into the thickets/bush lots I grab one of my 30 cal guns or my 444 Marlin and get the job done.

3 for 3 with my 308. All dropped where they stood with one shot. A 308, with the right load and shooter can have 500 to 750 yard shots all day long with plenty of stopping power. The .30 cal. bullet is plenty heavy for brush (make sure what is in and behind the brush).

Not on your list but they make the model 16 in 6.5 creedmoor. Same trajectory as .300 WM. Hornady makes ammo for it but you can reload the round to 3000+fps.

Of those you listed I'd go 7mm - 08. Either that or 308 with 140 or 150 gr bullets.

I'm gonna say go with something for the ranges you hunt, with a lot of thump. 35 Rem, 338 Fed, 358 Win, 444, or 45-70. With the 338 Fed or .358, you can still reach out to 300 yards.
