I do believe I'm selling my SKS and I have 5 to $600 to buy an AR. I found the DPMS Oracle 4 500 list a few places I've seen a few Colts 4 600 and the Remington model and the Ruger AR 556 4 700 list.

I've heard a lot of good about the DPMS and the Ruger ar- 556, but I wanted to ask some guys that shot them to see how they like them.

The rifle will be used mainly for plinking and home defense.
 
I don't care for the hand guards on the Oracle, though many are quite accurate. It is very hard to go wrong with a Colt
 
Due to my potential perceived bias, I'll stay out of this unless there are any specific questions, except to say that if your budget allows, I'd consider the Bushmaster QRC instead of the Oracle. Better gas block, melonite barrel, and a cheap red dot to get you started.
 
I have several ARS in various configurations. Only one of them was bought off the rack. Building (some call it assembling) allows you to customize it to be exactly what you want. It also helps you understand how everything works.
 
I bought my daughter the quite affordable DPMS Panther a couple years ago. She can punch the same hole at 100 yds with Hornady factory ammo. It's a shooter, and so is she. :) I can't shoot that good with my Bushmaster consistently.
 
I have Daniel Defense down to DPMS Oracles and everything in between. My Oracle shoots in the same holes as my DD inside of 100 yards. Most companies are just fine and you can't really go wrong. Stay away from anything with a carbon upper. If you plan on using them for competition then you need to be picky but for plinking they will all do the trick. Be prepared though because ar's are very addicting.

This but beware, it's quite addicting. It seems like I always have one is some part of the build stage.

i have DPMS Oracle, and it's a great Ar for the price...and it shoots great right out of the box,,,

agree and the DPMS are not picky with ammo either...like some AR...that cost twice as much...
 
PSA runs some excellent sales and you shouldn't have a problem staying under 5-600.

I have a dpms sweet 16 for sale in the classifieds right now. It is a very accurate rifle with about any load I have put through it and still looks brand new.

How much is the oracle? Palmetto sells complete losers for $129 and pin on uppers for $239. That's $370 plus transfer.... you're under $400 out the door. If cheap is the name of the game you can still build one cheaper... even though it's not really building at that point.
 
The advantage of building comes into play when you know you're going to modify. If you know you are going to free float it after buying, then essentially you are buying two hand guards and two gas blocks. Same for the stock, grip, etc.

How much is the oracle? Palmetto sells complete losers for $129 and pin on uppers for $239. That's $370 plus transfer.... you're under $400 out the door. If cheap is the name of the game you can still build one cheaper... even though it's not really building at that point.

No, PSA has a complete A2 style upper with BCG and charging handle on sale right now for $249. Not something I would use for a build but still perfect for someone wanting to build a plinker.

Ain't that the truth. Last weekend I finished a 300 build that is still waiting on optics. Meanwhile, I just hit the "place order" button on a 458 SOCOM upper.

As others said, that's pin on with bcg and ch. I bought one right after sandy hook and ran a couple hundred rounds through it. Never a ftf. Just had open sight so can't really attest to accuracy but I'm sure it is close to the oracle.
