I live in maryville, near sevier county( a ways from the wma and public land near loudon 45 min or so) I am looking for some opinions on where to hunt. I have talked to the managers at Foothills WMA, Kyker bottoms and wares bend and it seems wares bend is the best for deer.So what I'm wonderin' is: I want to deer hunt with my boys during the different seasons and I have a few choices

1. cherokee national forest but its a long ways away, its really huge and I don't even know where to start but it is awe inspiring with the vast landscapes, also I can do a few dual beer/deer hunts
.
2. wares bend wma, it's 45 min or so from my place but its kinda small with a large hunt population and I don't know where to start.
3. random tva properties(teeters lane and the areas off of hwy 72 near tellico lake) that don't seem to yield many deer and they are small, same distance as wares bend.

I am an inexperiecned hunter and I get 2-3 occourences a year to hunt if I am lucky, I am open to all sugestions please let me know what ya think. I have two atree stands, climbers, I have never used but would be willing to try em out.
 
I think you should apply for the draw hunts when the application period opens this summer.

I used to hunt that TVA land and Wears Bend. I accessed it by motorized canoe. There are deer, but the buck to doe ratio is pretty lousy. However, it's better than nothing and I frequently had an entire section of the TVA land to myself when I hunted it...probably because everybody else knew better than to burn time there.
 
First, put your kids in for the juvenile hunts at Chuck Swan.

As for those Public lands......I have hunted all of them for deer and will probably never hunt the again. I only go to Cherokee for the bear hunts. The others have too many people.

Drive a little,farther and go to North Cumberland. Also, put in for draw hunts at Oak Ridge. You might consider Catoosa during the open bow hunt. It will take you some time to learn a particular area well enough to consistently see deer.
 
Diehard hunter, where on north Cumberland would you go, it seems I'm about as far from sunquist portion as I am CNF.
 
I have always hunted west of Caryville. I get off the exit there, go across the interstate and follow royal blue road about 1/2 mile to the first gravel road to the left. There are miles and miles of mountains to hunt right there and it is pretty neat to be hanging in a treestand and have an elk walk up on you!

Thanks a lot everyone. I am looking into north cumberland now as well. Still feel free.to post your opinions and popular locations.

I'll never forget last year twenty people tried to tell me where to go in chuck swan. When I got there I had forgotten all of them and thankfully dustin the area manager gave me some good advice and I found a good spot.

I'm not asking for your sweet spot just a few places I might try to get a start on.
 
Ask around - there are some decent places to hunt (private land). It's not what it used to be, but Rockford has some deer and some places closer to Friendsville are huntable as well. Good luck!
 
Man, in that area just sneak in to Cades Cove..... j/k don't really do that!

It would be neat if they offered a quota hunt there tho like PI :)

I am trying but I can't seem to figure out who owns what. . .

I drove around for two hours with two of the boys trying to find landowners and every house seemed deserted. Who would've though! Farmers out during the day...
 
I live in Rockford and if you can find someone to let you hunt out here, but a lottery ticket cause you're bound to win big.
I've been here four years and been to almost every house with enough of a yard to hold deer and get turned away.

Like the other have said. North Cumberland is good. Catoosa. And the quota hunts are the way to go
