Where is a good place to elk hunt?

Looking to take a elk hunting trip in the near future, but I'm not sure on where to go. I have looked at going to Colorado but was wondering if there where any other places to kill the big one?

I wasn't trying to be funny, but if you want to just about be assured of killing a big bull, and are prepared to shell out 10 or 15 grand for the privilege, the west is full of those opportunities. Notably New Mexico, Jicarillo reservation, Vermejo Park, etc. These are wild elk, but the harvest is so restricted, and on such large private areas, guided, that your success on a bull with a lot of ivory is pretty much assured. All of the public big bull possibilities of which I am aware, involve extended years in drawings before you are awarded a tag(I currently have 8 preference points in Colorado).
 
I am going with a new outfitter in colo. archery. Highly reccommended by people in the know , that I know. Reasonable priced but don,t expect to kill a monster. Bulls in the 250-300 class. I,m satisfied with that with my bow.
I killed a big bull with MZ in Utah, year before last. If you You were to buy a landowner permit for that hunt it will be close to 20grand. Like the man said. How dep are your pockets and what will you settle for ? that was on Monroe mtn, home of the Snyder bull. Costs $85 non refundable just to get in the draw. Lots of people with 12-14 points (years ) don't get drawn. If you want the real lowdown, subscribe to hunting fools magazine, it breaks down every western state by odds, quality, etc. unit by unit It's not cheap either , 100 bucks per year but worth it for the valuable info if you are new to the hunt. For average size bulls, Colorado is the best option, and not bad on the pocketbook. Why do you need an outfitter? I went fourteen years on public, took eight bulls myself, had friends take several more. Many outfitters in Colorado are guiding on public land as well.For a first time Elk hunter, a 250 class is going to look big. Its a lot of fun, but very physical when you start packing them out on your back. Good luck.
 
Tickweed, just what you said ! I have been there done that. sleeping in a tent waking up damp, coking your own meals , packing in , packing out. Thats for the younger folks! I for one Aint gona do that any more. That's why I use an outfitter, and yes part of it is on BLM land but access is another thing. I don,t care who,s land it is , reasonable chance to kill a decent bull without killing myself is why I,m using an outfitter ! Make sense ?
 
we're going to the white rive national forest in Co again this year. it will be our 4th trip. every trip at least one person has killed one. its all do it your self and there are a lot of animals there. probably not the best chance to kill a monster but it will be hard to find a place with a higher success rate.
 
SALTMAN, surely you weren't referring to the 2006 hunt with me!That was a walk in the park..........LOL... And my wall tent DID not leak a drop. Of course, it didn't rain while you were there. I am returning to that area this season for an OTC archery elk tag and building a preference point by applying for the archery deer tag..Good Luck,wherever you hunt out there guys!!

tag this year is $579. we pack in about 4 miles and set up camp. except for once we were able to drive to where we camped. we rent horse to pack out stuff in but have have also paid someone to pack us in. just a tip, if you dont know much about horse, learn before you go or pay someone to do it. trust me, that 1st trip started out pretty rough :D
