When to plant Buckwheat and Cowpeas?

I'm looking at planting a 1.5 acre plot with Buckwheat and Cowpeas to hunt during bow season. When would be the best time to plant?

Also, this particular plot is currently overrun with purple vetch. How will the Buckwheat and Cowpeas compete with the vetch?
 
Vetch is a pretty aggressive plant. It can take over. You might want to mow it down and turn it under before planting in fall. I would plant the cowpeas and buckwheat about a month before you want to start hunting over it. Also remember that both of those plants will be killed by the first frost, although until then, they make an excellent fall attractant.

That's an under statement. I planted arrowleaf clover and turnips in this same plot last year and alot of the clover was still there early in turkey season. Went back over there a week ago and it was solid vetch. I bush hogged it all down but I suspect it will come back. Do I need to mow it again, spray it, then turn it under?
 
I just planted a bunch of it in my roads a little over 2 weeks ago. It was mostly as erosion control as we put in waterbars + green manure to help build the soil. I'll turn it in late this summer when I plant clover.
 
You can either turn under the vetch or spray it and turn it under. But it will probably come back again next year. Deer will eat it though.
 
we planted 10 plots with buckwheat two weeks ago. Plan on disking it back in when it goes to seed in a couple months.

can buck wheat take any cold weather at all? i hunt the al/tn line and we dont get a hard frost till december sometimes . 2nd do deer like buck wheat any better than winter wheat??

I thought about doing this but didn't know if it would come back or not. I'm really looking to plant it to hunt over during bow season so it needs to be in it's prime during October.
 
We use it primarily as a soil builder during summer. Can usually get 2-3 "crops" out of 1 sowing. If you are wanting something to bowhunt over, go with wheat/oats/rye. They are about 1/3 the cost of BW, and will last all season.

With that said, in years with no acorn we have mixed BW with the above + DER to act as a cover crop when we plant early fall.

All depends on the rain fall,Ive done it a few times,works well if the rain comes when you need it.like anything else I guess.

If you have deep pockets, planting buckwehat and/or soybeans in with your fall planting can get deer hitting the plots hard as early in the fall as possible. Of course, you have to realize the buckwheat and soybeans will be killed by the first freeze.
