When to hack n squirt?

No this is not about messing your pants when you cough with food poisoning. :-D

I got out last week in the morning and did some hack n squirt on the junk trees growing in the ditch on the farm. 1:1 Crossbow and water.
Hacked around each hack berry and sycamore and gave each cut a good shot of crossbow. Got to thinking....

Did I do this too early? When is the correct time of year to do hack n squirt. I want these trees dead with no regrowth.
Is the 1:1 mix correct for hack n squirt?

Will this work on privet (jap honeysuckle) ?

I have used other hack and squirt herbicides such as Garlon and Arsenal and the worst time for them is in the spring when the sap is flowing up. The herbicide needs to get to the roots to kill the tree. A very good time is in the fall with sap flowing down. I've done it in the winter mostly because I don't want to be around the insects and heat. I've done some in the very early spring just before leaf-out and it still worked. If I had to guess I'd say it works on most plants. The paperwork usually says what it kills. Another option with shrubs is to use a clearing saw and cut them off at the ground and either spray the stumps at the time of cutting or spray the spring growth with generic Roundup from a pump-up sprayer.

Spot on. Any time but when the sap is rising until full leaf expansion in late May. I prefer basal bark application for privet. Basal bark can be done year round. I would probably go with a foliar application in fall on Jap honeysuckle.

Whats basal bark application and how do you do it?
I hate privet and we have a ton taking over the farm. That stuff is hard to kill !

1 part remedy & 3 parts diesel in a pump sprayer. Spray the bottom 12"-18" of the stem. Done. Dead. It's great on shrubby/thicket spp because you can stand in one spot and kill out a decent circle instead of walking up to each and every stem to treat it. I prefer this on stems up to 3"

Thanks Mick! That is awesome. That privet would be nearly impossible to hack n squirt as it grows in a clump. some of the trees that got hacked/ last go round are starting to turn brown. Not sure if its just fall or if I got em.

Ill mix up some crossbow and diesel and get after that privet as soon as it cools off a little.
