My family and I tried jugfishing last year for the first time, and we are hooked! But we started a little later in the season, and I was wondering when most people started putting out jugs and how tactics change throughout the seasons?

I've never done it earlier that the spring crappie bite, because generally in colder months it seems like the cats are all down deep (most of our jug setups don't go deeper than about 10-15 feet).
Also, I prefer fishing with a reel and rod while the jugs are out, so it's most fun to set things out while stuff is biting.
I'm sure some old pros on here have the tricks to catch them in the cold, though.

I've always jug fished in the summer... not because it won't work other times. I just enjoy jug fishing at night to escape summer heat.

I put out jugs year round with the same rig.. never change .. always catch fish.. swimming pool noodle, 5-6 feet of line.. cut skipjack,shad, or bluegill in that order..

I never did stop and catch some every time I go out. But the best time is around mid spring. I use same set up as everyone but I throw my castnet when I first get to the water and get all my bait pretty quickly like that. Nothing like cut bait fish for gettin some big channels and blues!!! My only technique is to set them in a row so that they will drift out of the bay towards the main channel and then go right over the dropoff point that the big boys like to hang around.
