Food Plots Wheat or Oats?

Will be heading home here the end of the week, and will have next week to put in some fall plots. I am wanting to put some Aus Winter Peas along with either Winter Wheat or Forage Oats. I will be able to hunt from about mid-Oct until the second week of Dec, so looking for something to bring them in during that timeframe.

Which do you guys recommend, and why? Also, what is the difference in price between the seed?

I like to mix them together to offer variety. Oats are more expensive. I paid 11.95 and 12.50 for wheat, 19.00 for bob oats. I wont plant pure oats because Ive had winter kill before in oats.

I agree with Steven. Mix them that way you still have food for them if the oats die off.

I don't plant my oats til the end of Sept or first week of Oct. if you plant Oats too soon they'll get too tall and a frost will turn them yellow and the deer won't feed on them. That's why I wait. I put mine down with fertilizer later on and they only get 4-6" by gun season if the deer let them and they'll go all year without a frost turning them yellow. That's the way I've done mine the last 15-20yrs with no trouble. Oh and I only plant the Bob Oats. They'll be alot cheaper then the Buck Forage Oats and I never could see any difference in them planted side by side. But that's jmo.

We have 1/4 equal parts of seed wheat, winter peas, bob oats & rye grain blended & bagged for our kill plots. Deer have a choice and something always comes up.

Co-Op in Cookeville for the more expensive wheat. Putnam Farm and Home Supply in Cookeville for the cheaper wheat and the oats. Better call on the oats before you drive though, they didnt have alot left and I dont know if they were getting any more or not.

I like a mix, but if I had to choose it is wheat first as it is more hardy than the oats where we are and less likely to be burned by early hard freezes should they happen
