I just wonder if this could be it,came from the same lick...look at all the ticks on it,I cropped it....... YES I KNOW IT IS,look at the bone sticking out of it;s back leg.
Sorry but was previewing it.I am no expert but I think this deer is going to make it ...they sure are tough.

I believe the deer is just shedding its summer coat into its winter coat...goes from a reddish color to a brown...I could be wrong.

the deer is just shedding and that is not a bone sticking out of it's leg. it is the hair from it's tarsal gland.

I believe the deer is shedding as well. Also believe that is hair from the tarsal gland as well. You can see the hair on the 2nd pic on a back leg and see it on the other back leg in the last 2 pics.

I cannot believe that some of you think this deer is getting its FALL coat, that is ridiculous,As far as the Bone sticking out put your reading glasses on ,my goodness You cannot see the hundreds of ticks all over this deers Body?( in the bottom pic.)
There was blood running down it;s face in the other pic.
Muzzyman you are a smart ass that knows very little about anything.
BSK or Wes what do you think,Do deer get mange?

A little harsh darton!! I think he was just trying to throw a little humor out there. But i do agree , i wouldd think a deer would only shed coming from winter into spring/summer. Or maybe it is late in shedding its sun burnt winter coat??

Sorry that I am an IDIOT...didnt realize this thread was directed towards two people. Probally would be best just to pm them the pics, that way you bypass all the wrong answers next time. And yes I know its odd for a deer to shed for a FALL COAT, but it was an opinion! God forbid that we got your question wrong, I ask for forgiveness in advance.

I apologize to whoever I offended ,just had a bad night.
I will try to keep my emotions under control from now on.
I tend to get to excited,BUT THE DEER HAS SOMETHING WRONG WITH IT.
I hunted the original ,and must have deleted it,but it looked like it had been hit by a car.
Once again I hope you accept my apologies for acting like a Jerk
Not just trying to brush it off, I am sorry, and i will admit when I am wrong..

Nothing wrong with the leg. What you are seeing is the tarsal gland. If that was a bone sticking out, the deer would not be putting any weight on the leg. As for the shedding, deer are bombarded by many different blood sucking insects during warm months including ticks, mites, and lice. Deer can and do get mange. Typically, unless there is something else going on, or a secondary infection sets in, they survive just fine. That deer appears to be perfectly healthy. She is alert and not emmaciated. No reason to worry about her.

You need a pill of some sort,I dont see a thing wrong with em,20/15 vision, deer change at different times. Why call out Muzzyman, just having fun, chill out.

Deer molt in spring and late summer. They can and do get mange especially if their immune system is compromised. They can also get something called DHLS or deer hair loss syndrome. Evidently it is pretty rare though. I think she'll taste just fine! :)

Yep,we can,must have missed it,kum by ya.....

I am sorry but I disagree,I have been doing some research ..this deer has some serious problems,
Many stem from the feeding of shelled corn, which I take full responsibility for. This was the deer a month ago.ALL I am going to say.

Could be ticks, but it looks more like burrs in the hair. Ticks generally concentrate around the ears and eyes.

And it could be that if those are ticks ,, she might have just rubbed and rubbed and actually caused her hair to shed. looks exactly like a short haired dog that we had that had a type of blood mange!! a genetic thing

I think BSK is right. Whenever I see a deer eat up with ticks their ears and face will be covered in them, but you won't see them distributed all over their body.

I don't see anything wrong with the deer. If it was really sick, you would see all its ribs and the bones sticking out of its rear hams as it became emaciated.

The deer is fine

Im sorry but you must see something that atleast 20 other ppl do not. The deer is FINE! If you just posted the picture to get opinions you got them, they are just not what you beleive they should be. Do you have any other picture from when the deer was "unhealthy?"

Look at it this way....Even if something was wrong, what could be done about it. No reason to worry about things you cannot change.
