What's a good bolt gun in 243???

Looking in to getting a bolt action long range gun in 243. Not real expensive but not junk neither. What's some good options?

Browning Abolt, TC Venture, and Tikka would be the ones i would look at.

Weatherby has one in the $500 range and i think you can get a remington model 7 synthetic for around $599.00. Ive owned both and they are good shooters. Another one that people have overlooked is a marlin x7 i believe its called. Ive owned o of them too, good shooter also!!

Remington 700. Anything you think you might want to add to it for long range shooting they sell for a 700.

Walmart has a Remington 770 I think with 26" barrel for $279 . I shot one this weekend 3 shot group at hundred where all touching. With hand loads. Synthetic camo stock. Nice gun.

I got my daughter the SS version of that same rifle TL,and it's a decent shooter with factory Cor-Lokt's. Very good rifle for the money imo.

Went out to check the zero this year before juvy, and she was off to the right. I made the adjustment,and told her to squeeze her best shot a couple more times, and the two to the left and a little low were the result.

243 is a great whitetail round. Light recoil and a flat shooter. I have never had a deer run more than 30-40 yards with mine. I used to shoot a 300 wsm for tn whitetail and shoot a 150 lb dressed deer and blow both shoulders out. A well placed 95 gr 6 mm bullets can do anything larger caliber a are capable of with less powder and recoil.

A .243 will kill deer. I've done it a lot, but with so many calibers to choose from, it's not a great choice for a "long range" rifle that the OP wants.

Other than needing to know the details of what the OP considers "Long Yardage" I totally agree with this statement. And would agree with it with lighter 85gr Sierra Gamekings also. There are not many calibers out there that I have not shot deer with or was standing next to the person doing the shooting and a .243 kills them as quick, or quicker, than anything out there. That is as long as bullet placement was where it should have been. ;)

Remington 700 or Ruger American Rifle. I own both in different calibers and both are very dependable rifles. They have been better to me than I have to them.

Same here. My son's Rem Model 7 in 7mm-08 kills white tail like the hammer of god.

The 243 is very capable of being a long range gun. The problem is if you're wanting a factory barrel the twist probably won't be able to stabilize the heavy bullets needed to shoot long distances.

high shoulder with a 53 tsx at 3000 fps drops them straight down and dead

dead is dead hell 17 centerfire to the neck will kill one as fast as a 300 win mag

243 round is not any thing special or a magical killer

shot placement is the key period

it will kill deer and all sorts of critters all day long
if you like it great have at it

for long range IMO
get something that shoots .264 or .284 or .308 bullets

the bullet choices are better than any dang .243 bullet

split second is split second it wont kill quicker and technically with the other rounds the bullet will get there faster but again will not kill quicker

i have never question a 243's ability to kill a deer as i feel a .223 will kill them all day long as well

doesn't the 243 shoot 6mm bullets or something almost the same ? seems like there are a wide variety of factory weights without having to special order or hand load.seems like a few bench rest shooters like the 6mm :)

55gr. B-tip or 70gr. B-tip shoot good out of 22,24,or 26" barrel in .243 and the 55's are smoking!!! Off top of my head, think the 55's were doing mid 38 t0 3900fps. don't hold me to that though would have to dig out my notes to be certain. Will flip yote right off their feet at over 200yds. Pelt will not be any good though but putting the smack down on a yote is always fun. A trigger job, possibly bedding job to some of the low end .243's and they start to group very well.

wow, this thread went south fast, lol. I like a .243, but that is my opinion. I anything 30 caliber. I also like anything in the 6.5 caliber. There are plenty of options and opinions out there. pick something you like. I would go with a 700 in any caliber bc of all the customizing you can do, new barrel in twist/length/conture/fluted/crowned, new stock of your choice. Plastikkas are great for out of the box shooting/hunting. but if you ever wanted to build a semi-custom rifle, 700 is the way to go. get a 243 in a 700 adl for $350 from Acadamy. shoot it. then save the $ and send it off and have the action blue printed and add all the little fancy touches you like. you can do this a little at a time, and even change calibers when you get yourself a new barrel. My friend just changed his 700 from a 243 to a 6 mm BR, and it is a bad little gun pushing the same 95 gr bullets at 2900 fps with 10 grains less powder as the 243 which only is hitting about 2700 fps with IMR4350. good luck man. get what you want and shoot the heck out of it.

Thanks guys for the suggestions. Also the question was whats a good bolt gun in 243, not what caliber is better for deer hunting. Dang there are so many smart people on here it ain't funny. My theory is if you can shoot good, a 243 will do all you need. On the other hand if you are a bad shot hek a 300 mag will not help you. So for the 243 haters go to the range and get some practice in. LOL I love it!
