Starting a QDM club in north MS and I know its getting late but we would like to get some food in the ground, what would you recommend planting that may survive, we do have corn and soybeans to plant.
 
I plant winter wheat,oats mixed with clover in the fall. It might not be too late to plant clover if you get it in right before a good rain, but i've found that clover won't do too well unless you get the soil ph right. This usually means adding quite a bit of lime, and clover requires regular mowing, and fertilizer.
 
Might ask BSK as well, he is a certified Biologist, and railroad engineer.
 
BSK has experience firsthand as to what will happen to an atv left on the rr tracks while hunting. lol... He is a wealth of knowledge on wildlife, and property management. Welcome to the site.

I planted buckwheat yesterday for the first time. It is relatively low cost, foolproof and will help the soil. It will create a crop in a short time and can be disced in for a second crop if you want. Other than this buckwheat experiment I have always planted in the fall because of my dry ridge top situation. My main thrust has always been wheat or grain rye and clover planted in late August or September when there is more moisture and less weed competition.
 
I haven't considered buckwheat, quick question, if I don't get my corn and soybeans in the ground over the next 2 wks are they useless at that point?
 
We typically do not plant our corn in southern TN until around the first week of June, have planted 4th of July weekend before... We try to time ours and plant a few days before a forecasted rain. I plant my beans alot later than normal as I want them green during the first couple weeks of bow season, don't really care if they produce many beans.
