What to sow on logging roads

We are just finishing up select cutting 150 acres and need to get the logging roads sowed down. We have tractor, disc etc. What is the best perennial to sow on these roads. They will get light 4 wheeler & tractor use. Fescue is out!

There are better guys on here to suggest what to plant than me. However, I do suggest sending a soil test in. Logging roads have been stripped of top soil taking away all the nutrients. You are going to need to spend more time and money on lime and fertilizer than seed. If you are just in a hurry for this year I would plant wheat for this year and hope for the best. Then do it right next year.

If you do not plan on applying lime and fertilizer and doing alot of soil work,.. and you never ever plan on sowing anything else in them roads and all you want is to hold them together with something that will get wildlife use,. i would use perennial rye. BUT,.. only in that situation. Perennial rye is a heavy reseeder and will smother out anything else you ever try to plant.

If your gonna prep that soil and apply lime and fertilzer,.. go with durana clover.

clover is what the guys in Maine used to plant. Great for the grouse too! Now that is a perennial.
