Just got to my stand to find a new rub on about a 5" caliper cedar tree. Any body know the relationship of caliper to deer size? If there is one?

Ive watched small bucks rub large trees but only with a EXISTING rub already there. I have never saw a small buck START a rub on a large tree. Mature bucks will rub anything large and small but signpost rubs are usually big.

here's a dumb question probably but what do you mean by signpost rubs. i've seen it alot.

Usually those big trees , mainly cedars, that don't move when a deer rubs it.

That looks almost exactly like the one I saw. I got a glimpse of the 9 pt that made the rub. Took a shot but missed. It will be my mission to get him from here on out!!

I usually look at how high up on the tree it is, that will at least tell me if it is a big bodied deer.

I also like to look for saplings bigger than your thumb that are broke in half or twisted up. A small racked deer just won't have the leverage or enough antler to break a tree that size.
