what kind of group

1/2" -1" groups with most ammo,find the ammo it likes & then you might do better than 1/2" for a 3 or 5 shot group.its a rare ruger that will do a 1/4" at 50 with stock parts,rimfirecentral.com is a great place to learn a few tricks to help out a 10/22 ,mike243

does the gun like the faster ammo or the slower ammo? I have tried the viper type and then tried the subsonic and the results are not very good.

I'm thinking about getting a target barrel, surely that will make for some tight groups.

They are great guns, but not known for incredible out of the box accuracy. I would say 1/2". You could customize it to do much better but you will likely add weight, which is a trade-off if you plan to hunt with it.
