What is your opinion of Win model 70?

A few years ago I inherited a Winchester Model 70 .30-06, made late '60s. I have not had the chance to shoot it much. The first time I shot it, it jammed upon feeding and ejecting. I got good advice on here about cleaning and tweaking the spring, and now it feeds and ejects well. But I don't know how well it shoots just yet.

I need a good scope and some range time with it. Is this a good rifle? Is it worth putting a good quality scope on?

Yes they are good guns, however not the quality of the earlier
models.

I have two like yours, a 30/06 and a 308 and they both have served me well.

Put the best scope you and afford on it and go use it, and enjoy.

i bought a model 70 featherweight last year in .243 it could be the best money ive spent towards a firearm. put a burris fullfeild 3 by 9 on it. i like it. it shoots little groups and looks sharp.

Its one of my favorite rifles. I like its 3 position safety and claw extractor. I think its probably one of the best hunting rifles ever made.

What would a fair price be on a say above gun 90% condition in say a -06 or .308 go for in case I ever found one?

The above gun is not a pre 64, my guess is about
4 hundred for the gun.

Mine are not for sale, I only buy them, never sell them.

I Agree with CDW 338. Scope that sucker and enjoy. My uncle has a couple of late 60's M-70's that are very good accurate rifles.In fact his 670 is one of the most accurate rifle I have been around.

To some Winchester 70 fans it was and is to others it ain't.I personally like the Classics better as they have a gas block on the bolt that the Pre 64 doesn't. My uncle prefers the Post 64 Push Feeds.

The biggest thing to me that promotes that was the SUDDEN REDESIGN from 63-64 if you ever look at both you will see why. Going from "Workmanship" to "Machined", Metal to Pot Metal,Cut Checkering to Pressed ect ect ect. I would liken this to going from a Corvette to a VW BUG. But there aitn't one thing wrong with either.

Have to agree with tim on that one. Never liked the 3 postion safety on them have owned a couple nice winnys tho

the pre 64 actions are the cream of the crop, now called the Classic. I also have a push feed model 70 and I have not had any feed or extraction problems.

I've only owned one Model 70 out of the dozens of rifles I've owned over the years. It was a featherweight post 64 and was a disaster from the word go. I'm sure others are fine but that one just soured me that they let something like that get out of the factory. Any of them can have problems and sorting them out can be rewarding if you've got the patience. Back then I didn't.

I have a push feed in 30-06 and used to have a Classic 300WSM and the cheaper push feed was and still is smooth as silk. The Classic was stiff to close the bolt and I ended up selling it.

i have never been impressed with browning. when shopping for our son's first deer rifle, we looked at the Abolt. the savage we bought was much smoother, wood to metal fit was MUCH better and it was $200 less.

YEP as it should be, Browning invented a lot of Winchesters guns anyway . BUT I Don't know about that trigger change. It looks like the same as the new one on Browning guns, the old Winchester trigger was fully adjustible and gave a safe but light trigger-pull. Is this new one OSHA stuff set at 6 pounds pull. ????

Ditto! There are no Remmys in my safe because I havent picked up one that I liked any better than whats in my safe already. I'm not saying that they are not a perfectly functional rifle, I just dont get what all the fuss is about with a model 700. I guess the its the same thing with Fords and Chevys.

Well I will say this , I have Remington 700,s Winchester Model 70,s and Browning and Wheatherbys and they will all shoot good. It is the shooter that counts guys. All these rifles will outshoot what the average hunter can do at 100 yards offhand. There are no benches in the woods only a tree are to to lean against and in some places in Colorado there are only Juniper pines as small a small cedar trees. Practice offhand with those rifles and then show me some targets.

I used a M40, remington 700 platform in the Marines. Hart and Schneider Match barrels, McMillan A1 fiberglass, a modified Schmidt & Bender 3�12� 50 Police Marksman II LP rifle scope. The the Marine Corps began replacing the DD Ross trigger guard assemblies with the M5 detachable magazine trigger guard manufactured by Badger Ordnance.
Standard cals 7.62x51, .223, and .300 Win Mag. soon to come .338 Lapua.
One shot! One Kill! If you run you will die tired!

However, Savage, penny for penny is still the most accurate out of the box rifle on the market.
If it puts meat on the table. Then I stick with my pre '64 Win 30WCF (30-30).
