I am considering listing my dog's services to track deer. She is a beagle/jack russell mix and has a great nose. She has found all but one deer I have had her track (that was because we couldn't find a blood trail or arrow). What is the going rate? I really don't want to overcharge people. I enjoy the process, but also don't want to do it for free either.
 
I think there is a web site for deer trackin dogs,there are a few guys in southern ohio close to our lease that use Dachshunds to track deer, but I dont know what their rate is,and they wont travel very far to do it so they must not charge much for their services.I think I would make it worth my time and trouble.
 
When they call and ask the price,Id say it depends on how big the deer is.That would also determine whether I traveled a long ways or not as well.I wouldn't charge if no deer was found but I would have a separate,flat rate for that.Actually,I think itwould be a neat business to have.You would need to do something else to make a living.

This^^^^ I would nave a flat rate. Time I would have to travel would be the only factor in the price. Charging extra for a " big " buck would be like price gouging.
 
The bigger costs more because that way the guy trying to feed his family would pay much less.The trophy hunter would pay more for his big antlers.And yeah,any deer deserves to be found,callind a dog man would be last resort.
 
Whatever you charge, I think it would be best to do a hourly rate instead of a fixed fee. This would make up for drive time, long walks to where the deer was shot and difficulty of terrain.
 
ask yourself based on your dog's experience what would you be willing to pay.travel plays a part as well .until she has alot of training under her collar cover your gas and a little for your time and as she gets better then set a price based on distance you have to travel.keep in mind you have to keep it real because after all your dealing with real hunters like yourself and not some tv celeb that has deep pockets or some one backing them.just my thoughts on it good luck with the training .i have a min dashhound i want to see what she can do but never had the time yet to do it
 
I would happily pay a reasonable rate for travel. I would go with the standard $.51 per mile. And an hourly fee for tracking. Start the clock when you start the dog, and end when/if you find the deer. Tell them up front that its their responsibility to contact TWRA before tracking, and that you wont cross property lines without permission from owner -- and time spent seeking permission is time charged.
 
Probably be some good money in that. I don't ever charge for it though. That's my Great Danes favorite thing to do anyway. Although I've never had anybody ask me that wasn't local so it's hard to say.

Well then he should shoot better.
 
In illonois the main guy there charges 500 flat rate and doesn't matter if he finds the deer. If its dead they find it IMO he found one for one of the Drury brothers daughters deer over 2 miles from the stand she shot it from
