what is the best economic rifle?

I've been looking at several rifles including the savage axis, mossberg atr, weatherby vanguard, and a few others. Which of these would you choose in .308? Any other suggestions or comments.
 
Marlin XS7 or buy a used higher $ gun. I have bought very few "new" rifles, most of mine are older rifles that are still in good shape and shoot good. Mossberg doesnt make anything that I would own, the Savage Axis would not be on my list, but a higher grade Savage or even a Stevens are good rifles. The Weatherby Vanguard is the same rifle as a Howa, both are good rifles. I have heard nothing good about the Remmy 770 or 710. It also never hurts to save your $ a little longer and get a nicer gun....
 
A lightly used Rem 700 ADL with the cheap plastic stock. Walmart was selling them new for $275 a few years ago, but they can still be found lightly used in the $300-$325 range.

I have used a .270 vanguard for 25 years and it is a killing machine. I do need to upgrade the optics, but the 25 year old tasco still gets it done.
 
The best economic rifle really depends on what you can afford. Generally the lower priced rifles will not have some of the great features that the higher priced rifles have. The Marlin XS7 would be a nice choice in 308 for a low priced rifle. However, you could possibly find a great bargain on a nice used rifle on gunbroker or here in the classifieds in 308 that you have always dreamed of.

Don't forget to top it off with a good scope with good mounts. A cheap scope can make a $2000 rifle shoot terribly.
 
Of my newer guns, the Mossberg 100ATR is okay and my Marlin XL7 is pretty nice. I'll gladly take either of them to the stand.

man i would take anything i got in the cabinet to the woods. if u cant hit a deer sized critter with it, it dont need to take up space
 
I agree with the Remington 700 but he said economically. If I did not have much to spend on a rifle I would go with a savage. Heck if I had more I still may buy a savage. To me it is one of the most accurate out of the box guns I have ever had. The new accutriggers are awesome to. Just my 2 cents!!!

Is was either "RifleShooter" or "Shooting Times" (I get both) tested 18 economical bolt action rifles (3 each of 6 different rifles). They had to have a MSRP of under $500 (sorry Rem 700 you didn't quantify). It was a good test as they tested accuracy, feeding, triggers,... The Thompson Venture was the clear winner.
 
ui believe it goes back to what you mean by economic. if yoou define it as getting alot for your money, i would say the kimber 84 classic is the best deal on the market. For about 850.00 if you shop hard, you get match grade trigger, match chamber, suoper nice walnut, hand rubbed oil finish and a silky smooth mauser action. if you are wanting low investment, i would say the marlin xL7 or a savage.
