What is it?

I found these when we turned the ground over in the garden last year and I have been meaning to put these on here. We have found many arrow heads and spear points. Also some axes or hatchet heads what ever you call them. I am not big into artifacts so I don't know the correct terms.

These are fairly big (10 to 12in) flat river stones and there are no rivers with stones any were near here. They have small indentions in the top like a drill mark. Is it a stone used to make fire or something else?

Yep, you guessed it! It keeps you from drilling a hole through your hand when starting a fire with the "2 sticks and a string" method.

Are they a common find?

I've found a few. What's cool about them is when you find one, you know your in the place where they camped. Even cooler if you can make your fire using it.

That and they may have used them to crush nuts or other berries on, but "nutting" stones are generally small. Guess they could also be classified as a mortar. Cool finds either way.
