In my opinion I would go with the humminbird. I have the 1198, and love it. The reason I like mine better than the Lowrance is, the structure scan, and down imaging is built into the unit. The Lowrance you have to mount the brain somewhere, and you have to buy the s.c. seperate.The Humminbird is more user friedly. My 10 yr old son can even use it. Plus it seems to have a better immaging. I am sure others will disagree. Humminbird is better priced.

yea they are the same. The 898 has a 7 inch screen, where the 1198 has a 10.4 inch screen. Where are you thinking of buying from ?

I bought mine at JandH products. They are cheaper than bass pro on the 898 by $100. plus no sales tax, you will save over $200.

I was sold on Hummingbird and went to buy mine. Instead I got a three hour class on Lowrance vs Hummingbird and went back home to think on it. Went back again and spent another couple hours talking with the guy and doing my own reasearch. I ended up buying the Lowrance HDS 7 and 5 units and side scan as well. I hooked up the front and rear units to the structure scan, one looking sideways and one looking down. It actually cost me less than the Hummingbirds after rebates. That all being said they are both good units and offer awesome electronics. Get the one you like best and enjoy!
