with bullets available,I am leaning towards .264,,I Love the .257 if only Sierra would make a 130-135 gr Matchking bullet,,the .277 would work also but the 135 SierraMK looks to be the only bullet out there,,the .284 looks like it would work but runnin the numbers I see no advantage of the .284 over the .264 in an 06 size case,,and even more so the .308,,

my vote goes for .264,,is there anything I am missing,,

If I am going to use it for hunting, I'll take the 284. For paper punching, then the 264 would do fine. For deer either will do. I like the 160 gr for the 284.

I think you are right Mr. Big. Years ago I arrived at the same conclusion that the 6.5mm bore size was at the top of the heap when considering a combination of all the attributes that 'we' like in a round. If one plots a curve from say .22 to .40 something using typical capacity rounds and looks at recoil, energy, sectional density(penetration), accuracy(as defined by ability to hit what you are shooting at because of the other factors), wind bucking, field effects on game, ranging, and other esoteric qualities I think you have a bell shaped curve with the 6.5 on top. I think you need a 1/9 twist or steeper to get the most out of heavy bullets in this bore however. That is the reason the 6.5x55, 6.5MS, .260, .256 Newton, 6.5/06, and .264 mag are mythical in their performance.

I like the shorter cases myself so that is the .260 for me. If I wanted a bigger cased 6.5 I would go with a Newton just because of the nostalgia/lore/uniqueness. But in reality it is just a 6.5/06. I think the 7mm bore is close, but it is a close 2nd-just my .03 cents. PH
 
I'd vote with DA on the 280AI for an all around hunting rig.

I'd vote for the 6.5 for long range whitetails/antelope and the like as well as paper punching.

But it's also hard to beat the 35 whelen for the big critters with teeth.

Not to high jack the thread.
I had a logger buddy I hunted with in Wa, and he shot a 6.5 Rem Mag.
Awesome deer killer, and great round. At the time their were not many choices for re-loading bullets, and he had to play with his bullet seating depths a lot.
Very impressive round indeed.

Both are great, and its not a race.
 
I had to make the same decision decison a couple yrs ago, I was having a custom gun built and I knew I wanted the O6 case but not sure what bore diameter. It came down to 6.5 with a 1-8 twist or a .257 with a 1-10. I went with a .257 and chambered the gun in 25-06. I wish I would have went 6.5-06. Love those long heavy bullets. There just isn't much bullet selection available in .257.
 
I like the .264 diameter. You have alot of match bullet choices, and some very good hunting bullet choices. I am not sure I believe Swift's data, but their 130 gr Scirocco is listed with a .571 BC for their 130 gr bullet. I shoot that bullet out of my 264 @ 3250 FPS with excellent accuracy, but I havent killed with it yet.
 
I'd vote .264 as well. I've had good performance with all the bullets I've tried in my 260 REM, from 85 gr Hollow points to 140 gr deer killers. A 120 or 129 would be a nice long-range antelope or deer gun in 6.5-06.
