What is a Rock Shelter?

I see you guys referring to digging in front of "rock shelters". I'm assuming this is like a mini-cave, just kind of an overhang where one could escape the weather a little. Am I on the right track here? How deep do you usually have to dig? I've never done anything like this, but find it quite interesting. I have several arrowheads from my grandaddy, he picked them up over the years farming the homeplace in Montgomery County.

I think of them as bluffs. Alot of times you can see smoke marks on the ceilings of the ones that were used. They also tend to face certain directions. Im sure muskyhunter can elaborate more on that subject for you.

what steven said, just a place on a cliff line that overhangs enough to get under, some large, some small. the south and east facing ones usually are the best.
some have artifacts on top of the ground and some will be deep. flint shards are the way to figure out if it has been used or not.
