What happens with a gut pile?

Last buck of the season I gutted him in a field with a trail cam on the pile. See what happens in just a few hours......

I'm not sure if I saw any crows. On my property they show up the next morning literally by the dozens.

I did the same way back when 35 mm film cameras were all that was commercially available, probably close to 30 years ago. Back then, I was a bit surprised that most of the pictures were of does coming to the guts.

We put a cell camera on a pile a few years ago. Gutted at last light, within an hour vultures were on it, they consumed more than half of it by midnight. Coyote chased them off then drug the rest of it off. We were back in the AM to hunt and there was nothing but a blood spot left in the dirt.

On a lease in Crossville that was next to the dump, lot of vultures around and seen gut piles gone in less than 1 hour., they hear a gunshot they were headed there.

Buddy had a young Golden Eagle on a gut pile in Wilson Co. Had the local warden take the photo to be analyzed as to what It was.

Killed three does one morning in Lewis Co. That evening I went to the same stand and had to run the buzzards off . Once in Giles Co . a crow had picked the eye out of a eight point I had killed . No more than 45 minutes since I had shot him . He ran off but I heard him crash .

I had no idea buzzards fed at night

One of the things that I find interesting about this is, you always hear people say over and over again never gut a deer near where you hunt, always drag them away to gut them, gut piles will scare deer. Just makes you wonder if I didn't pull that card as early as I did. How many more deer would've actually stuck their nose in it. Either it's just another curiosity scent, or they're all wondering what the hell happened to Fred.

What scares me is an accident immobilizing me in the woods, and not being able to fend the critters off. They'd be rough on you if you couldn't move.

I had several old-timers back in the day tell me, "If you want to shoot a deer, sit over a gut pile." Looks like the picture proves them right.

I've did that as well . That evening were I killed the three does two came by that evening . On that little top if you was on it you'd have to go by a gut pile .

I have never drug a deer with the guts in it, and have never had it to bother deer the next day. Have seen deer lick guts, blood soaked arrows and blood trails

Only reason I have moved deer to gut is to keep yotes ect from moving in and keeping the deer on alert, coarse crows and vultures are quick to spread the word, sometimes I have to gut right there to drag them out, within 2 days nothing but a few red leaves are left around here these days, every property is different. I would rather not have all the ruckus at my stand site.

I can understand scavengers being interested, but why deer?

i've peed out of a tree stand before & had young bucks come straight in upwind to stir the leaves and sniff around. one bedded down under me.

Dunno for sure, curiosity would be my most likely guess though. Drawn to the smell.
