What goes "tock, tock, tock...???

and repeatedly. For minutes at a time, like 30 minutes. It's a little higher than the "water drop" but could be that too. It seems to happen when this animal (I'm thinking turkey) notices movement but can't figure it out. It's happened to me a couple of times this week. And I know turkeys were in the immediate area. The closer I got the pitch got higher, almost like a putt but not quite. When I got real close, it stopped. It started a few minutes later about 100 yards further away. I would see or hear turkeys and go to try and stalk them in heavy camo. When I got close, I heard this sound. Some people say it's chipmunks but they usually have a higher pitch "chirp". I know this because I damn near stepped on a few, even today. It seems like it's a very short yelp, in a way. I'll try and get a sound file tomorrow. But they've been doing it all week!!!

Sounds like chipmunks, but if it's turkey they have a nervous cluck they are probably seeing you aND clucking while they are walking off

turkeys will "putt" when they sense danger but it really sounds like you are describing chipmunks. Sometimes they just make a high pitched squeak, but sometimes they make the "tock tock tock" sound you describe. If you get closer and closer and then it stops, it's not turkeys because they are already on their way out when they start putting. you get close enough to the chipmunk until it ducks into its hole to hide. Had plenty of them around on monday when I was turkey hunting, lots of rocks in the area.

I don't have chipmunks at any of my places, so I don't know what they sound like. But, as Rock mentioned, turkeys will make a nervous cluck, which is somewhere between a normal cluck and a loud Putt. When they nervous cluck, they're on the fence about whether to be really scared or not. Soft purring and clucking might calm them down (if you're turkey hunting), or they may shuffle their wings and walk away briskly, nervous clucking as they go.

very interesting read, thanks for sharing. Never knew the clucking was a warning of a bird of prey. Next time I hear that I will be on the lookout.

Chipmunk. They do that sound sometimes and seems like they never quit.
A turkey isn't going set there and cluck and putt at you, or anything for longer than a few seconds.
