What do yall think about this seed mixture?

Last weekend (Aug 21st and 22nd), we bush hogged and sprayed. this coming weekend (2 weeks later), we are plowin, disking, fertilizing, sowing, and cultipackin.

Here is our mixture:

Buck Forage Oats
Winter Wheat
Australian Winter Peas
Dwarf Essex Rape

We already have everything except the Rape. Kinda hard to find the Dwarf. I was thinking about doing some Crimson Clover in place of the Dwarf Rape. What do yall think? Since it looks like w are going to have an abundant acorn year, I am wanting to have some plots that mature later in the year....hoping after the prefered acorns are eaten, we will have plenty of food waiting on em.

We are wanting to just do annuals, because we have had loggers in there, and next year we are going to do everything right! New thickets with some new growth, with outstanding food plots. Unfortunately, we were unable to get a lime truck up there this year because we couldnt find anyone with a big enough lime truck. So, we are just going to have to settle with some fertilizer. Our soils usually arent very acidic and anything we plant, usually comes up very well. Like I say, we tried to get it limed, but are gonna have to settle for next spring :( .

What do yall think a good fertilizer would be for these seeds? And has anyone planted this mixture? If so, any success?

I like the sound of that mixture. The Peas and Oats will be nice and the wheat will insure that you have growth. I don't know alot about what mixes well with others, but that sounds like it would be a good combo to me.

Ecactly my thoughts....having the wheat where atlease something would come up :D . Some that I asked were worried that there might be too much competition between each one, but with it all spread out evenly the way I am doing it, it should do just fine. It will all be depleted and scattered, and shouldnt be a problem...atleast I hope! :)

very similar to what Im planting. Ive heard oats are about as easy to grow as wheat. I think you should be fine.

i am planting the same mixture you have but clover instead of rape and no wheat. Just make sure you get the ratio of seed per acre you want or you will overseed and may have some problmes. i am doing 40%oats,40% peas,20% clover. mix how you want to just dont overseed may hurt more than help. good luck

I have done 40lbs BFO, 5 lbs Peas, 5lbs rape per acre with success in the past. You might substitute turnips for the rape?

I started substituting forage type turnips for rape. Turnips have just worked well for me. I get Appin and Seven-Top, no bulbs just greens.

The Dwarf Rape seems to be hard to find and I dont know if we will be able to find it by this weekend. I am thinking about planting some Crimson Clover in the Rapes place. That should work well too right? I wouldnt mind having some Crimson Clover coming in next spring for turkey season. I am planting some Purple top turnips in a seperate location, so I will have some of those. But would Crimson Clover be good in place of the Rape?

I have been planting the same mixture for many years with good success.

40# Oats
20# Austrian winter peas
10# Crimson clover
5# Yucchi Arrowleaf clover

I might replace the arrowleaf with red colver in one plot this year as a test.

The arrowleaf or red clover should last until the end of May or even the begining of June

This mixture came straight out of the book by Craig Harper of the UT Extension.

Make sure you plant the oats and peas first, disk it under a couple of inches, then plant the clover on top. That arrowleaf clover is about the size of a poppy sead.

JC,.. i'm concerned with that mix since you didn't get the lime on it. Especially the oats and AWP's. Both need a ph above 5.8 to perform well. I would go cheap this year and try to get the most bang for my buck in the spot,. go winter wheat, crimson and arrowleaf clover mix.

I am a little concerned as well. Though, everything we plant always does better than expected. I would assume the ph is higher than we think, but then again, I dont know because we didnt do a soil test this year.

But actually, we are going cheaper than we have in previous years.....as opposed to getting brand name seeds (Imperial Whitetail, Biologic, Evolved Harvest, etc...) that we have done in the past. We usually plant close to 8 acres, but this year we are doing almost half of that (betweeen 3-4 acres).

deerchaser, one thing I am unsure of and dont have any experience with since this is the first year we have had some logging done. Some of the places we are planting are in little 1/4 acre tracts where the loggers had their loading docks. They cleared/cleaned them for us...Would some of these locations be better/worse (acidic) soil than our existing fields? Wasnt sure about that. Like I say, we basically want to just get something in the ground that are annuals. Next year, everything will be done to perfection.

JC,.. the soil is gonna be worse in those logged/cleared areas. Even if your lease is in the better soils of tn around williamson county,.. it will be worse on cleared land than established fields. The reason it will be worse is when the land is cleared the best topsoil is removed. Anytime land is cleared and the topsoil is removed,. you are dealing with a lower ph value. How much lower ph is location specific,.. around here you go to deep and you hit clay ,.. which is much worse.

I wouldn't drop much money on fertilizer without the lime either,. fertilizer is about useless if the ph value is below 5.2. I use to have a chart on that,.. but can't find it at this time.
