What bullet in Federal Premium?

My wife and I both shoot a 270Win and both rifles shoot right at an inch groups with 130gr Rem Core-Lokts. The problem is out of five deer shot we have only had two complete pass thrus. All deer were between 30 and 80 yds., four broad side and one shot in the back between the shoulders. The three deer that ran didn't leave much blood at all! Two ran roughly 100yds with no blood for the first 60-70 yds. and they were NOT shot high at all. I'm afraid were going to lose deer if we hunt near any thick stuff due to the lack of a blood trail. I have used the Core-Lokts for years and always had good luck but in the last couple years it seems like they changed something and they started coming apart. I have been finding pieces of copper and lead instead of a mushroomed bullet!

I have been looking at the Federal Premium ammo and was wondering what bullet would get consistent pass thrus and leave a decent exit wound. They have the Nosler Ballistic tips, Nosler Partitions, Seirra Gamekings, Trophy Bonded and Trophy Copper. Anyone with experience with any of those prefer one over the other? Is their copper bullet comparable to Barnes bullets?

I like the federal fusion myself.

I emailed federal about the copper bullet. It is there version of the Barnes. I'd say use the copper or nosler partition. No worries with pass thru for me with those.

The nosler partition is one of the best penetrating bullets out there.

Ballistic tip for me, I never shoot deer over 200 yards and always get pass through even with shoulder shots out of the 270, they thickened the jacket on the 270 bt a few years ago and since then I always get exits about quarter size when shot behind shoulders. This is just my experience with them over the last seven years and budsgunshop has them for 19.95 a box right now

Hard to beat a partition. I am partial to Accu bonds but I don't think Federal loads them anymore.

i have killed 117 deer with a rifle various cartridges and various loads and bullets . heck i have shot a doe with one bullet makes scope adjustment and shoot another with a different load. why you ask. well when i give advise i like to know i an giving a fellow hunter the best advise to achieve their goal

the nosler e-tip barnes tsx ttsx or hornaday gmx (mono bullets)

i have more experience with e-tip killing at least 11-12 with the 140 and 150 in .284 always a pass through

i have no doubt the barnes will as I have used them in past (limited 2-3 deer)

no experience with gmx however a good friend (i trust) likes them

i love the accubonds in 270 killed several with 130 and 140 grain pills IMO that is the go to bullet 277

I switched from Fusion to Trophy Copper in my 280 a few years ago and have been more than impressed with them thus far. I've killed a few deer and hogs with them and have had pass thru's on all but two deer thus far. The two that didn't pass thru were shot at extremely hard quartering to angles and the bullet traveled approx. 2.5' through both deer while hitting a good deal of bone and still came within 1/2" of exiting. See pics of both below. Oh, and all shots have been DRT so far as well.

Started using the trophy bonded tip in 180 gr in my 30/06.awesome is all I can say .big nasty holes short short blood trails and there is blood !!!

I've never had an issue with the 130 BT from federal, all pass throughs.
If you want a premium bullet I would opt for a barnes, or similar bullet like DA recommended.
I would try to catch some sales on the accubond if it was me.

I don't reload so I have been shooting factory loads. My FIL told my wife last night that he has boxed up his reloading stuff and is sending it all here! Said he just wants me to load him some 300WM rounds this summer. He said he would even buy the powder, bullets ect. to load what he wants. So I guess I need to do some reading up on reloading. I have a gallon ice cream bucket full of my 270 brass. That will open up a few more bullet options to try out this spring. :party:

Now that you'll soon be reloading, that opens up much more of a selection. I'd stick with accubonds though.

this is the best solution to your problem IMO

read up on it find some one to come by and give you some pointers

I loaded partitions for a friend in 270 several years ago and he tells me all the deer he has killed have either dropped in their tracks or not went far at all and he has killed several.
Hard to go wrong with partitions. Don't know the load from memory but I can get it.

I don't own or have shot a 270, but I have killed 200+ deer with a rifle, shotgun, and muzzleloader.
I load my own for anything I can, for sure is worth it, you can shoot most any bullet you like.
Out of my 30-30 I shoot 150 gr speer hot cors. That bullet performs great.

Muzzleloader I now shoot barnes, love them, killed deer out to 250 yards with barnes. Used to use powerbelt platinums (plain powerbelts suck) the platinums performed well out of my 45 caliber muzzleloaders out to 200 yards.
The hornady pistol bullets do just fine out of my percussion and flintlock.

Killed deer with most any shotgun slug made by federal, winchester and remington and since I got my savage 20 ga, I love the remington accutips.

Out of rifles, I have killed deer with core-lokt, partitions, barnes, sst's, silvertips, ballistic tips, e-tips, swift a-frame, and several I don't remember.
I prefer accubonds, partitions and swift a-frames. All leave an exit hole no matter the distance and kill them quickly, especially the accubonds and do not
cause excessive meat damage.

Caliber selection, size and speed of caliber, does make a difference in bullet selection. Generally the slower and/or smaller the bullet, the more premium bullet(meaning partition, swift a-frame, barnes (not tipped), etc. you need to shoot.

I've been using Core Lokts for years. Early on I got great blood trails, many fell in place. The last two have been little to no blood trail with deer running 60-100 yards. I am switching after season to the Hornady Superformance SST for my Ruger M77 270.
