I live in East Tennessee, in an area that has deer, but I'm surrounded by houses. After returning from my middle tn lease last weekend I walked into a small patch of woods on the back of my property to look at a game cam I keep out just for entertainment and to watch for trespassers behind my house. I find a few does, coons and some birds on my sd card. On my way out I notice a rub on the back side of a tree. After a little more investigation, I find major sign. 3 good scrapes and LOTS of rubs... I mean these trees are shredded and some large trees at that, 2 being as big as my thigh. Having hunted east tn all my life I'm just not use to seeing this kind of sign, especially in my back yard! The issue being, at this point im literally standing in the middle of all this sign and I'm wearing work boots,jeans and a hoodie.. nothing even remotely scent free. I set out a mock scrape, move my camera, hoping that if the buck making these scrapes is full on chase mode maybe the scrape scent will interest him enough he will overlook my scent. Anyway, it being an area surrounded by homes would you think this deer would be less alerted by human scent? Or have I pretty much scared off a buck I had no clue was even here.. my camera had one buck cruising the edge of this thicket that same night I walked in and found it, but he can't be the one making these rubs... (small 6 pointer) should I hunt it hard since it's fresh sign or have I tainted the area? Thoughts?
 
The deer is used to human scent. The deer is wandering around a LOT of territory now. The deer may or may not be in your backyard in the next 2 months. No reason not to have fun and hunt in your backyard, but be courteous of your neighbors... use archery tackle and make darn sure you make a good shot on him... it doesn't reflect well on hunters for a wounded deer with an arrow sticking out of him to die in the back yard of the neighbors 3 doors down.

If your property is big enough use a rifle. As far as the human scent, there are not many deer in the state of Tennessee that do not encounter human scent on a daily basis, in myour experience I have found it helps to take a casual non threatening walk through your hunting areas pretty regularly. Deer will never tame theirselves to it, but if you can make it to where the family does in the area don't pay much attention to your scent it just may pay off in the end
 
You didnt ruin it, especially if your in a area he regularly smells humans close by. These neighborhood deer learn to tolerate a certain amount of scent, noise, intrusion, etc. That said, he will quickly figure it out if he regularly smells or sees you in places people arent on a daily basis. Deer become conditioned to certain things and notice changes quickly. Get in there and kill him while you have the chance.

How much land and do you regularly run cameras or walk into that area? I doubt you've scared the buck off but he's there for a reason. Suburban bucks are used to human scent and movement around homes but seek out an area that's typically nonintrusive somewhere in between. Do you see many does bedding in there?
