I have been watching a couple deer since well before the velvet hunt that I had hoped to get a crack at sometime this year. I worked hard and figured this area out last Feb when I got permission on it. By the time the velvet hunt rolled around this year I felt well prepared and aware of how these bucks were using the property. Well on my first evening set I got a crack at this guy at 26 yards. I felt like I put a good shot on him however he was not recovered and 3 days later he showed back up on camera, seemingly uneffected, by my slightly errant shot. I stayed out of the area completely after the buck showed back up on camera and waited for the conditions to be favorable again before I hunted him. Well yesterday evening those conditions presented themselves and I slipped in on him in an oak flat and everything panned out. I was unsure of the hit last night so I backed out. I went back this morning and he was only 50 yards from where I shot him. It's been an insane first week of hunting for me...can't wait for some more!

Where did your first shot actually penetrate btw?
 
This was the wound from the velvet hunt. I was 26 yards away shooting a 480gr arrow at about 290fps. Because of this situation I will never shoot a mechanical head again. His front scapula was never penetrated by the arrow. If I had a better fixed blade head on that shot it would have been fatal. I'm now shooting Magnus Stingers with the bleeder blades which is the head I used to kill him.

Good for you. I have advocated for fixed blades for a long time due to the experience you've described.
 
You might want to buy a lottery ticket right away. You are on a roll lately! :) Congratulations on getting it done the 2nd go around on this one. What a buck!

Congrats, he's a fine buck. FWIW, don't be so sure of any fixed blade in the scapula. Few years back, I shot an 80 pound doe in the scapula with 460 grain arrow (total weight), 275 fps and 125 Slick Trick Magnum. It sounded like a metal bat hit a rock out of a driveway, incredibly loud and piercing. True story here: that doe ran a short distance and eventually walked off with my complete arrow stuck in her scapula. It was barely shaking/moving when she walked. It looked like it was welded to her scapula. One of the craziest things I've ever seen. She went on to walk under my buddy little later that morning and he couldn't believe his eyes, a full length arrow sticking out of a shoulder but the arrow was basically fixed, no bouncing up and down at all. Never found any blood and never had a clue what happened to her. I say all of that to say I know a 80 pound doe scapula is not near as thick and resistant to penetration as a mature buck. Congrats again on a fine buck and sealing the deal the second time around. That's got to be a good feeling.
 
Wow that's a hammer! Great job. And those magnus heads are awesome. I've tested out the free replacement warranty too. No questions asked and a brand new stinger was in my mailbox in 3 days!
