West TN Sandhill Cranes

Just got a call today from a friend in Martin. Says that the cranes are really starting to come in, and he was looking at a field of more than 500 this morning. Jan 20th is going to be a great morning!

Anyone else hunting them?

Whats the season for them? Can you hunt them anywhere?

Locally, we are up to our eyeballs in sandhill cranes. Going Wednesday to load up on photos for the archives. My son works in Dayton and says a mudflat on the Hiwassee River is covered with them.
Sandhill crane hunting is done on a drawing for permits. Look at the top of page 19 in the regulations.

curious as to your reasoning for not going? Not a judgement...I ask this of many people. I have done the same with a turkey draw

It's a time kinda thing. If I went, I would want a guide. I already had 2 guided duck hunts scheduled in January when I got drawn for SC. One of the duck hunts ended up being cancelled a week or so ago. So between time and $$ I have decided not to go. I do regret putting in, getting drawn and then changing my mind. I wish someone else would have drawn instead of myself.
