We fished for rockfish at Pickwick this afternoon, they had all the turbines going full blast so the current was fierce, on my second cast I thought I hung up but as I tried to reel up to it I noticed my line had moved from the swift water to the calm water so I reeled up tight and it pulled back hard, I fought this thing for 1 hour and 40 minutes and never got it more than 5 feet off the bottom, it finally got me into something on the bottom and my line got cut, we'll after I cried for awhile we got back to fishing but the current was just killing me, my wife did manage one that weighed 6.6
 
that sux man, hate it when you cant see the fish and loose it thinking all the what ifs....
1hr 40 min is a long time fighting a fish, my average fight with a rockfish is about 5 arm pumping minutes. you prolly had a big o cat fish or a paddle fish
 
Yep, it sounds like you had a hoss. Too bad you never saw it. I agree with shorefisherman that it was probabaly a big cat or paddlefish. Maybe foulhooked. I have put 40+ pound rockfish in the boat in 5 minutes or so on many occasions with a medium rod and 17 lb line. They are strong fish but burn out fairly quickly.
 
Man I hate to hear that, that's like the most disappointing feeling in the world. All the anticipation while fighting the fish then to loose it, uh I just hate the thought lol.

Last year I hooked a cat while bass fishing with a worm. after about 10 mins of fighting the fish finally surfaced. I was fishing in my brand new boat,First time boat owner, needless to say no net. so when I went to grab the fish I spooked him and he tried to take off and was violently trashing, so I grabbed the line about a foot from the hook to control him...pulled the knot and their goes the biggest cat I ever caught. It took everything in me to keep fishing. I was so unmotivated to fish after loosing him lol.
 
I have no doubt it was a catfish, if I had to bet, I'd say it was a giant flathead, I've caught a 100 pound blue cat and got it in the boat in 30 minutes and it moved around more, the way this fish refused to leave the bottom and from some friends experiences with them I bet it was a flathead

bet it was a big cat, sorry to hear that. The biggest rockfish I ever hooked was on for about 10 seconds before the hook came out. I never saw it and it just stripped drag until the line went slack and my lure came back up. Hope to boat one next time I am on the water.
