WELL CRAP NOW WHAT

Ok Saturday i went and sat by some dead fall. I used my rattle and doe can. I rattled for a minute then rested for 30. in between i would hit the can twice. After a couple of hours i heard burrrrrb burrrrrb and a weese right behind me. It did it three times and i was freaking out because it was right behind me and i didn't turn because i thought it would run. I heard it run and was wheesing out of sight. A friend told me it was a dominate buck and that i ruint my chances. Said that it only happens once in a while and that he wouldn't respond again. Is this true because i went today and rattled and hit the grunt call but it was raining. What would you do to try to bring him back. I thought about using my target buck and trying next weekend.

without seeing it no telling what it was. buck most likely it could had been a 2.5 yo or a 5.5 yo I wouldn't say it ruined your chances but you did educate him. your friend is just shooting the crap he has no idea what it was either. if the deer winded you or saw you and he was mature it will be extremely tough to kill him if he is a young deer not so much but you did educate them.

it does stink but it is the best way to learn. you'll get another opportunity just stick with it. and learn something every time you go out. all the good hunters learn something every time they hunt if they have hunted for one year to 70 years always something to learn.

True, but our hundred hasn't. My father patrols it on his rhino doing his perimeter checks :) Also i would suspect some has happened but illegal on the park side, but i have seen rangers all over the place lately.

Thanks deerhunter ten and hopefully i will catch him with his guard down. Has anybody around Hamilton noticed any rutting or have i missed it. Same guy told me the rut will end tonight with the full moon.

at least you didn't have a very nice 8 pt walk right up to you after leaving your bow some 100+ yards away in the woods like I did last year. :eek: hope you get a crack at him, whatever it was

Dang i wouldn't be able to sleep if that happened to me catman529. I have never seen a buck other than tv and would love to get to. I am afraid if i had seen him i would have stayed in the woods, found a cave, and found a volley ball named Wilson. I would have came home when i got one :)

SelphLogging i have been trying to but nobody wants to go hunting with me lol. I would be more than happy to go with someone and film their hunt just to see a buck take a dirt nap. It gets boring by myself and don't know what to do. I just sit there like elmer fud lookin :)

Like some one said , you did educate him to that particular spot and he will be cautious but set up a little different and do you have a climbing tree stand ? Being up high you have the advantage especially when rattling and calling .

I have a climber and i didn't take it because it was raining and wind was crazy. I am going to take it in on Saturday and climb back off the funnel but the wind wont be blowing down the holler and all i can do is hope. I would be happy just seeing a living and breathing buck in person, beginning to believe i would have better luck seeing a unicorn, elusive these deer are :)

Yea i should just hunt but don't know when will be good next. I know that anytime in the woods and cant kill em on the couch is like rule number 1 & 2. However when will i know the rut. The only thing having any rut time is a couple of stray cats i saw :(

How was yalls first time hunting rut, what gave a clue as to what to look for. I see does mostly at night in the field but everything seams to have went nocturnal. Is most of the chasing going on at night because of this screwed up weather.

Very likely! Even when the chasing is at its best, if the weather is too warm the majority will take place under the coolness of nighttime. Now let the temps drop and get cold during this same time and you will see it going on at all hours of the day! The rut will happen regardless of the weather, but cold weather will allow hunters to witness a lot more of it during daylight!

For the most part, including myself, if someone tells you that the deer will do this, will not do this, the rut is on, the rut is over, you cannot hunt when the wind is blowing, you cannot hunt when the wind isn't blowing, etc. you can about count on it, if you or someone thinks it is a guarantee that it will or will not happen then the opposite will probably happen. HUNT as best you can, if you are not hunting is about the only guarantee in deer hunting and that is you will not kill anything if you are not out hunting.

If you ever experience rutting behavior you'll know it. A doe/s come running into your location, the back one stops and peers back over her shoulder and then hurries on her way, and then you hear the incoming grunting and crashing through brush and suddenly one or more bucks run in following the does' trail. Be ready to shoot quick because your only shot may be at a running deer. It's a blast!

No way to know if it was a buck or doe. Ive had does do the same sounds..... wont ruin your chances completely...just hamper them some.

Second, there is all kinds of rutting behavior. The doe may be running or she may be walking and the buck may be anywhere from right with her to 20-minutes behind her. She may look back or she may not and far more bucks come in silently than they do grunting. It is just a matter of being ready for anything. But Mike is right, get a hot one coming and it is a blast. Also, often, they run in somewhat of a circle. If they get by you the first time, don't give up. They may be back.

Third, for Christ's sake, quit doing all the thinking and get out in the woods. You are about to think yourself out of a deer. Stop listening to your buddy(s), if they knew anything, they'd know they don't know anything. Go hunting and quit thinking.

And lastlty, Eric...did I read you correctly? Hunting 20-years, seen one buck?

Thanks for the words, i am planning to get my stand in and pick a different location around a funnel coming out of a thicket and onto an old road by a field. May take off Wednesday or Thursday to hunt. Then spend daylight to dark Saturday and Sunday.

Yea that is correct saw plenty of bucks outside of season but never during just my luck

Absolutely unbelievable! Twenty years and one buck??? Lord, you can see more than that just sitting in my office, looking out the window. I would flat change where I am hunting.
