Weird squirrel...pic

Yesterday I shot a squirrel in the back of the right lower jaw and he crawled under a big brush pile and I could not get him out. Today I was standing behind the house looking and listening and then here came a squirrel hobbling towards me from the neighbors yard. He was not acting right and I put a couple shots in him and killed him. I found the old wound from the day before an even more strange his top front teeth. One was broken off at the base and the other had grown all the way in and was touching the roof of its mouth. I was not sure if the squirrel had gotten infected or something so I saved the tail and ditched the carcass.

Heck I might do a euro just for kicks and giggles but its jaw is broken by a BB. Guess the critters will have a feast instead.

I wonder if he found a year round primary food source was something really soft and didn't wear his teeth down?

if that were the case I would wonder why I didn't kill other squirrels that looked like that. I kill em fairly often in my yard. Also a squirrel will chew on a lot of things just to wear their teeth down so I doubt food source would affect it.

True.... Maybe it grew while he was Hibernating..... who knows? How was he eating in the first place?

I'm sure he was eating, just probably wasn't chewing too well. He acted fine yesterday when I shot him and today was acting funny because of the wound.

I've heard before of rabbits that get some sort of disease will quit nawing on stuff to file their teeth down and they curl back like that, eventually killing it.

Maybe the same goes for that squirrel. So good call on tossing the meat

The tooth would have grown through the roof of his mouth and into his brain if he didn't starve to death or die of infection first. It is not uncommon for this to happen in any rodent if they have damaged the lower jaw. Not only do they wear them down gnawing, they wear them down as they rub against each other. Grinding your teeth is bad, but for squirrels, grinding their teeth is good.
