I am looking to purchase a new rifle and like the Weatherby Vanguard, but I do know the Rem 700 is very popular. Which one would everyone recommend? My budget is $1500 for scope and rifle and I am looking at .270, 7MM 08, or .308. I want a rifle that shoots a lot better than I can.
 
IMO Remington's QC has been slipping a lot here lately. For this reason I would go with the Weatherby, even though I like the older M700s.
 
Take a look at Savages new ultra light in 7-08 or 308.Weighs in at something like 6 1/4 lbs.Find a new or used Zeiss Conquest 3x9x32 or 3x9x40 would make a nice light weight hunting rig.
 
i don't have any experience with the vanguards but i really like my 700's i've got a 243 7mm-08 and a 308 and the new ones are not the same quality as the olders one but its mostly cosmetic in my case
i do like the new adjustable trigger but don't like the screw sticking down right at the trigger where it could tear your finger
of the 3 calibers you listed the 270 and 308 ammo is less expensive and more readily availiable in various weights in factory loads
the 7mm-08 is a great round but your factory choices are really limited

Good suggestion, weight is not a big concern to me but didn't consider Savage. How is the trigger and accuracy?

Absolutly no one makes a gun under $1000 that is more accurate or have a better trigger than Savage with Acutrigger.With the light but full length barrell you wont rapid fire and get the best results but the 1st and 2nd shots are unbeatable.I think it retails about $800 but should be able to get one closer to $700.Thats a couple hundred more than Weaterby or Remington but does have real wood stock with a great finish.
 
One other little thing:

The Weatherby's have a very short throw bolt ---- only have to raise the bolt about half the distance of the Remington. That was a feature I found attractive with the Weatherby line many years ago.

have read the Kenny Jarret and a couple of BR gunsmiths say the same thing. jarret said he refuses to work on a newer m700, has to have an older serial number before he will do anything with it.

X2 remington BDL or CDL for sure you can get one for under 800. Google buds gun shop they have the best prices I can find. No tax and free shipping to FFL, steves in columbia will do it for $ 30 + 10 for bg check. So $ 800 for gun $ 100 for rings and bases leaves $ 600 for a good scope. I would check out [cameraland] for that. I looked at zeiss, trijicon, swarovski 1", leupold mk4 and kahles
on saturday. Out of all these I liked the zeiss 4.5x14x50 conquest as good as any and was also the least expensive. Out of those calibers 270
 
Have you checked out a Howa 1500? Weatherby uses Howa barreled actions for their vanguard rifles. I have a .223 1500 and it is very consistent shooting in the .350s. I like mine so much that i recently put a hold on a custom build .308 I was going to do and ordered a Howa stainless barreled action for a semi-custom build. I know several avid shooters that have 1500s with very similar results. I would highly recommend atleast checking them out..$475 ish for the gun leaves you quite a bit of room for good scope, rings, and bases.
 
For a $1500 budget....Kimber Montana in 308, Talley Lightweights, MINOX ZA5 1.5-8x32.

OR

Winchester Model 70 Stainless Featherweight in 308 with the same mounts and scope mentioned above.

If you go with the .270, Tikka T3 with Talley Lightweights and a MINOX ZA5 3-15x42.
 
The winchester model 70 is my choice in 270wsm!

Kimber 84L in 270, Minox or Zeiss scope with Talley extra low lightweight rings.
Kimber 84M in 260 or 308, with Minox " " " " "

Any of those would work well and probably still come under the 1500$ limit

I plan on a McMillan Edge KS stock (going light) No flies on a Weatherby, just don't fit me well.
 
have any ya`ll shot and handled the Ruger Hawkeye,,I tell ya my older brother has bought two in the last year or so,,one in 257 Roberts with a 2.5-8 Leupold that IMO is the best feeling/pointing and shoots good enough to be the PERFECT deer hunting rifle..
 
I have a 257 Roberts in a Hawkeye. From what little I have shot it, its a keeper. It is a very trim little rifle. I have a 6 x42 leupold on it. Plan on carrying it a lot this fall.

beautiful gun. no way i would replace with a plastic stock
 
Tikkas are great shooting rifles from what I have heard and read. They are a sako spinoff of some sort and I have never seen a sako not shoot.
