I have a small area (22ac.) I hunt that has good food and cover but no water. Any Ideas how to put in a small water hole or would it be a waste of time? Thought about digging out and using a small pond liner from lowes.

I did it at my house it leaked so I lined it with 1/4" thick rubber roofing it worked great till they stepped in so I got a pond liner it worked great till they stepped in.IMO its not worth it I could have cleared a foodplot by hand for the work I had in that stinking hole!Also like football hunter said mine held just enouph water to breed a nice batch of skeeters to chew on me during bow.If you do it I hope your luck is better than mine.Good luck with it.
 
I used to hunt Ceder Forest quite a bit. We used to dig out holes in a wash and bury a 15 to 20 gallon tub in the ground. When it would rain those little washes would get water running through them, fill up the tubs and the deer would have water for a while. Every time you would get a decent rain it would wash the old water out and replace it with fresh. Worked pretty good.

You found a place that has enough dirt to "dig" in Cedar Forrest?? :)
 
We have 6 watering holes and 2 ponds on our place. The watering holes are small and most hold water throughout the entire year. Get someone in there with some equipment and have them dig them out. They dont have to be big....just a 25ft diameter will do. Just make sure that the ground is leveled out at the top, so you can allow run-off (to keep it filled from when it rains)

It wasn't easy. But i bet you would be surprised what's buried in those woods.
 
i would do something !my farm had every thing but water, its blessed with limestone rock so digging a pond is out ,so i borrowed a bobcat and just used some common sense .look for low ares or hill sides where water might drain too. mudd puddles are a good place to start looking .once i found 5 or 6 spots that i thought might hold water and get the most run off when it rain .i dug 2 or 3 feet deep holes starting with a slope and getting deeper as i went back .as wide as the bobcat bucket ,like i said i had to hunt hard to find the spots without hitting rock but it was the best thing i have ever done .the deer use then every day ,yes the go dry in in long periods with no rain but it will hold some water a lot longer than u might think .and when it rains at least every 2 weeks or so they stay full .i havent had any problems with the water getting to old ,because it drys up before it can and the next rain its freash again .sorry for the long post but like i said these littie "mudd holes " was the best thing i ever did even better than my food plots
 
The most important aspect of creating ponds, in terms of huntability, is the location. Do you have a topo of the area you are thinking about placing the pond? Is the area a ridge, bottom, or slope?
 
Sounds crazy, but it works. Put you some sand down and get one of the hard plastic pools like they sell at wally world. Kiddie pools are what they are called. Rain should keep it filled enough to help you out. You could camo it in the terrain or just leave it the way it is.
 
I try to put water holes at or very near every food plot,
David Hale got me to start doing that just like he does.

Going to start this year putting out stock water tanks in certain area's, they hold about 90 gallons, water tank in truck or Ranger to refill them.
 
Kidde pool works, you can find them in the summer where they blow out or off peoples cars after they been to Wally World. I have 2-3 that are 5 years old using the heavy rubber roofing material, no holes in them ? Also have cut the bottom 12-15 in off the white plastic totes that you see with the wire cage around them , but they have gotten expensive. Have a couple of them that are 8-10 yrs old. White doesn't bother the deer and during dry spells in rocky terrain they can be a great draw. Long extended dry spells I have had to refill with a couple 5 gal pails. but not often. I found that they will hold water much longer if they are in the shade. Don't worry about the leaves , seems the deer like the nasty water better than the fresh clean !
