I know it USED to be this way but recently have heard otherwise.
There used to be a 7 or 14 day waiting period before you could take possession of a pistol that you bought from a store.
Is this still the case or can you take immediate delivery after your background check passes?
Did the background checks you have to go through for any firearm purchase take the place of this waiting period?
Thanks.

Thank you.
Just cause I am ignorant and have owned like 2 used pistols in my entire life,,,, when did they change this? When the on the spot background checks started?

Walk out with pistol after background check in TN.
No cooling off period in TN.

My longest wait was about 30 minutes. TBI phone lines were swamped.

It started when the instant checks began. I can't remember the exact year. It was before I could legally buy one I know. I guess they figured if you pass the background check there's no point in waiting.

It shouldn't take much longer than 5-10 minutes. I don't know when it changed, but things are a lot better now than it was in 1994. That was the last time I bought a handgun.

When I bought my first handgun, the state of TN had a 7 day waiting period. It changed to a 5 day waiting period when the federal government adopted a 5 day waiting period. It then went to an immediate background check when the federal government did. In all actuality, the federal gun control legislation passed during the Clinton years actually lightened the gun control legislation in this state. We went from a 7 day waiting period to an instant background check.
