very indepth analysis about planting

Guys, I read this the other day and it has me worried about what I had plannned on planting. Its very long with so much info I am lost.

We have 34 plots from a 1/4 acre to 2 acres each and most will be only planted in winter wheat but I wanted to plant a few of them with a mix and to also provide a late season food supply.

I purchased materials to plant a oat, wheat, winter pea mix along with I bought dwarf rape and purple top turnip to mix in with the other mix I bought. From what im reading from this guys write up it doesnt sound like the rape/turnip mix will survive. Please help, I dont want to waste this sead. If need be I will just plant the rape/turnip in a designated plot but its not what I had really hoped to do.

Some of those statements contradict what the major seed companies have been selling all along. All the seed companies that i know of have a blend with grain and brassica. I have had good luck with most all of them. GreenPatch Plus and Pure Attraction are 2 that come to mind that have this type of mix and have done extremely well for me. Your blend will do fine. I have had success with very similar blends. Your only thing to do now is to decide how to plant it. Oat, wheat, and peas. Lightly disc that in and then top sow the rape/turnip. Or just mix it all together and sow away. Many are opinionated on this. For me, its what ever is easiest for you and makes the most sense.

I've not a had a problem with rape or turnip not surviving.

Thanks for your input, the fields have all be bush hogged and I have a 4' 3pt tiller im gonna take through the fields. You are right as I dont know if Im gonna plant and disc then topsow the other seed or what. I have a weighted chain link drag and I think im gonna just mix it all together and just take the drag across it.

If you have a drag, thats exactly what i would do. Mix, sow, and drag.

I wouldnt worry to much,if its green,and not grass,and they are hungry,and in the area,theyll eat it.

I dont plant it much but the only problems i have had is when i have planted it and the PH of the soil wasnt good and the plants remained stunted.

Here's the turnips/ clover I planted in mid August. Pic was taken August 29. Looks like they're growing. That was my intention. Don't read too much into an article that floods that much info. As stated, if it's green and they're hungry, they'll eat it.

They will eat the greens and then the root for the purple top turnips. We've been addind purple top turnips to our plots for years. They usually don't last long after the first frost.
