I have a cva optima pro 209 45cal m/l and I cant get it to group at all!!! I have tried 175gr power belt, 185gr shockwaves, and today I tried 225gr power belts. I went from 80gr,90gr,100gr,110gr,130gr, and 150gr. and got the same results. The sad thing is I was shooting @ 25yds. My groups didnt realy change between the different powder doses. I thought I had it at 80gr and I move the target to 50yds, the first shot was good and the second shot was almost off the paper! I stopped right then before I wrapped the gun around a tree. I changed scopes tonite. Any suggestions? :cry:
 
You said your groups didn't change between powder dose changes?

First, were they groups or just random holes in the target?

With 3 different bullets of make and weight & 6 different powder charge changes.............something had to give.

You said you changed scopes? But you haven't shot the gun since correct?

correct, I haven't shot the gun since I changed the scope tonite. When I went from the 100gr to 150gr the pattern got higher but I wouldn't call it a group. Doesn't it kinda sound like a scope problem?
 
Was there any grouping at all? How many shots did you take with each load? Did you clean the bore between shots?

Was the previous scope or mounts loose at all?

I cleaned the barrell between every shot. I shot 2 groups of 3 of each load. The groups were about the size of a baseball @25 yds. No the scope/mounts weren't loose at all. I even went down to the barrel making sure everything was tight.

I have had the gun for 3 yrs. I bought it new. The group that I have described to is the same group that I have had for all three yrs. I can't take a shot over 50yds for fear of wounding an animal or missing.
 
To me those groups are terrible. If it is throwing a group like that at 25yds thenthe group is going to spread the farther the target is. At 25yds the gun or any gun should stack the bullets.
 
I know this is going to sound strange but try a patch and round ball with 80grs of powder. Shot 3 rounds before attempting any adj. to the scope.

Is the new scope bore sighted?

I am going out on a limb and thinking your gun doesn't like the Power Belts

I am trying to establish a consistant grouping, a round ball is basic. After that then you can determine a zero point if it was the scope, then go from there. Round balls are cheap.

I was reading a thread on another site, a guy was claiming great groups at 100yds............3" groups, that was his idea of great.

Let me know how that works if you choose to try it.

with a 45 cal. there is no need for over 100 gr powder loads.you never said how many inches the groups are at 25 yds. sounds to me like the rifle is spraying bullets all over the place. it must not like the bullet combo's or powder. try a few more bullet/sabot combo's even conicals. i see your also in tipton county. if you need some hands on help give me a holler. i will try to help you with it.
 
I staple 4 Redfield targets to a backboard and stand it at 100 yards. My first shot hit right where I wanted on the target. Only problem was it wasn't the target I was aiming at. It's been downhill since then. 5 trips later I can't get any consistancy at all with a few different loads. If I can't get it set up in the next couple of days there's absolutely no reason for me to go to the woods and I have the 9 day muzzleloader season off.
 
My Optima dos not like power belts. It loves the 300 gr. SST from Hornaday. 100 yds 3 shots touching with 100 gr. loose 777.

The red sabots slide with one hand down the barrel.

Mine is a 50 cal. I know alot of people on here swear by the Powerbelts but I think they are junk.
 
In my opinion, first, lose the powerbelts!!!! Secondly...the flash hole in your breech plug may have opened up if many shots have been run thru it. A new breech plug may likely bring accuracy back. Use saboted bullets (200 sst or 195 Barnes expanders). Gander Mountain in Jackson has both of them. Hope this helps. Good Luck.
 
If you think it might be the scope or mounts, sight your gun with the open sights. Are you using a good solid bench rest? Some people just naturally flinch a little when shooting also. When I use to sight my slug gun in with 3" mags and would really have to bare down to keep from flinching because I knew what was coming. I let a guy shoot it at an outing I was at and told him was going to kick, didn't listen and he ended up with a bloody nose. I would also say you need to try some differant bullets.
 
I had a remington ML that started doing that after several years of producing good accuracy. It turned out the crown on the barrel was damaged.
 
Ok people I have solved the problem :grin:......It was a bad scope. I pulled a scope off of another gun and put it on the m/l and it stacked the bullets at 25yds. Yesterday it wouldn't hardly group inside of a pie plate with the same powder/bullet combo. It makes sense to me now, the reason I bought the new m/l is because the last shot I took with my other m/l (knight mk85 54cal) it was sighted in 3in high @ 100yds and it hit 21in low @ 165yds and I felt like the bullet was dropping like a raindrop past 100yds. So I went and bought me a 45cal m/l for more range. I only wish I would have checked the scope then!

Glad you are all set now. I hate that feeling of not knowing, I have left a gun home and taken another for that simple reason. If I am not sure, it stays put until fixed.
