You may have got lucky, this is a post on another forum about a review.
This all took place in 2013, after the initial bugs had supposedly been worked out of the gun.
First issue: Safety would click ON randomly when shooting the gun.
Second issue: Magazine cap would not stay tight, no matter how hard I screwed it on. I found out the hard way when I got a face full of gas.(The ports are at the base of the barrel, by the receiver.)
Third issue: The bolt would randomly stay open about 1/2 way. This would be after the gun had 10 rounds through it. It was dirty and wouldn't cycle.
When I called to send it back, they told me it would be 4-6 weeks even though that gun has a "Platinum Guarantee" that states all warranty work will be done within one week. I send it back and get it 2 weeks later. This CS rep was the nicest of all I talked to, but he acted like he didn't care.
Fourth issue: I leave for Arkansas after getting the gun back. First time I shoot the gun, bang, bang, bolt stays open even though there is still a third shell in the mag tube. This happened 3 times in a row. Before anyone asks, yes, I cleaned the gun well before I took it hunting.
I call Remington again. Again, they say wait times vary, even after I told them I JUST received the gun back from repair. This person was borderline rude. I get the gun back in a week this time.
Fifth Issue: Gun performs fine, for the most part. I hunted a total of 5 days with it this time around, but didn't shoot much. At the end of the season, I give it a good cleaning. I normally use a bore snake when cleaning the barrel, but this time I used a brass jag. When pushing it through, I noticed several tight spots in the barrel that shouldn't be. I look in the barrel and see that it is RIPPLED starting about 2 inches above the shell chamber.
Again, I call Remington, this time I ask to speak to a Manager. The CS rep I spoke with said that was not possible, that he was the manager to deal with issues. He was out right rude on the phone. Again, I send the gun off. It comes back 2 weeks later.
Sixth Issue: When I get the gun back and open the box, I notice the choke tube is sticking out of the barrel 1/4 of an inch. I think, no big deal, it's just loose. NOPE!! It is stuck in there as tight as it will go. I have to put the barrel in a vice and use channel locks on my choke wrench to loosen the choke. And yes, the choke is supposed to be flush with the barrel.
That is just crappy craftsmanship and poor Quality Control on their part to let that get out of the shop.
Again, I call customer service. Again I speak with a rude individual. He states I have two options, I can get a new gun, or have a refund. I state I would like a new gun. I then ask how long the wait time is. He said indefinitely. He had no idea when I would receive a new gun. I asked him if it would be several months, he said in a very sarcastic tone, "I don't know, probably". I then ask for a refund.
He sighs very loudly and states he now has to go back and redo the paperwork. He does this complaining the whole time. I ask him when my refund will be submitted. He said "today or tomorrow". I then ask him how long it will take for me to receive my refund. He says 4 weeks from when I ship the gun back. I receive a shipping box 2 days later and ship the same day.
5 weeks go by. I call to see where my refund is. I speak with someone who had no record of my request for a refund being entered, even though they have a record of my gun being returned. I ask why they don't and give the CS agent's name who supposedly processed my refund. They then state my refund sheet is sitting on his desk and will be processed immediately. I should have a check in 4 weeks.
Another 5 weeks go by. I call again. I speak with the CS manager this time after a brief/blunt conversation with CS. He has no idea why my refund has not been processed yet. I asked why I was lied to the previous two times? He couldn't answer. He then told me it would be another 4 weeks. I tell him this is unacceptable and after another discussion, he agrees to have accounting overnight me a check.
Prior to this, the only guns I shot were Remington. I will never own another new Remington product, ever again. Not too long after this they had a recall on ALL their Cendaro rifles from 04 on. Then they had a recall and ultimately had to scrap their R91 pocket 9mm pistol.
As I said, I was a die hard Remington guy. Now I will never own any new product they put out. I understand some guns are lemons and I got one. What I don't tolerate is terrible customer service and that is what Remington gives on their flagship auto loader.
Stay FAR FAR AWAY FROM THE VERSA MAX!!! And any new Remington product for that matter. You'll thank me later!
