I checked my camera today and saw that a buck was still in velvet as of October 4th. How unusual is this?
I have only seen one in 33 years of hunting. It was a big 8 pointer on the last day of rifle season and i shot him.He had the pencil but the erasers were missing.

Oct 4 isn't out of the question, he could have definitely still shed his velvet normally. Some are just later than others? Now if it was Nov 4 I would say he definitely has a problem.

I have pictures this year of a buck in full velvet on October 1. On October 8, he had long shreds of velvet hanging off of fully developed/hardened bone that was still rusty/reddish from the drying blood. For what it's worth, this fellow has tremendous mass and is pushing 140 so I thought maybe it was the calcification process that took longer or something.
