I'm helping a friend out with a search for a black synthetic .308 semi auto deer rifle. I've been out of that market for decades and don't even know what's out there anymore. This will only be a deer rifle and not a daily or weekend shooter just for the sake of shooting. I say that due to the known receiver wear issues of early Remington 742 rifles. I need opinions and owner's experiences of more recent rifles.
 
Our semi-auto 308 is a SCAR and my Son spent a large number for it. We shoot 150 Accubonds Nosler book Varget Fed 210M primers. As accurate out of the box as any bolt gun I have ever owned. If it was not so expensive I would get one myself. We just canned it and the zero did not move. I was very very very impressed.

I worked on a Browning 308 semi auto and it was 2 inch circle accurate. I created just one set of loads and did not get a chance to try and improve those results because the owner was ecstatic and took his rifle back to mississippi. No other hands on any caliber except 22LR.

If your friend does not handload any rifle can be less than accurate. Start off with Varget and the light charge. it won't take long to get something acceptable.

For bullets I would use in a 308, 168's and down, the 12 is a nonissue.

My semi auto 308's are Dpms platform ar10's. A bit on the heavy side for carrying a long ways, but honestly not bad if you aren't walking too far to your stand. If I wanted something lighter, probably would consider a bar stalker.

I read up on those and when I found this one I knew he'd go for it. One thing that I read about the MK4 was an actual review by an owner. He said he thought it would shoot better once he had more rounds downrange. Said he had only shot it 300 times..........
 
I've got the bar dbm with short barrel. It didn't like any pointed tip bullets at all but the Remington 150 core loc shoot great out of my rifle .
 
I have a Remington 7400 in 270 that was my father in laws. I'm trying to convince my wife to let me sell it. It has a synthetic stock and in great condition. If I get the go ahead, I'll post it here. He also had one in 243 that mysteriously disappeared. Some crap for brains in law took it.
 
I've got a Browning mk3 BAR .308 in black synthetic I'm thinking about selling. It shoots great. I hunted with it for one year. Deadly and accurate with 130 grain Barnes Vor-TX TTSX BT. It likes 150Gr too. It's in excellent condition.

Ruger SFAR is light and shoots great. My son shoots Barnes 130 gr ttsx out of a 16 inch barrel and is getting 2,900 fps out of it with excellent accuracy. Be warned though, with the muzzle brake that it comes with, it is very loud. We put a flash hider on it and will eventually get a suppressor.
