Well smack me in the head with a limb, there was something in the stem, cleaned it good and all is well.

Whose bullet seating die do you use? I need one with a seating stem that will work for the Hornady 53 grain V-Max and the Hornady match BTHP bullets. .223 Rem.

I use the Frankford Arsenal Micrometer Seating Die. I bought it when it was on sale for less than $50 a few years ago and like it so far. It has 3 (I thing) stems for different bullet point contours and several bullet guide sleeves for various calibers.

I have one of these as well and haven't used it as much yet as I thought I would. I have eld stems for most my hornady seating dies.
