Under the bed gun

In my miss-spent youth I bought an Argentine copy of the 1911 with an uncle mike shoulder holster, bianchi speed holster, 6 extra mags, 110 rounds, and about 12 sets of replacement grips for $150.00. Didn't realize what I had and traded it to my cousin for a J. Stevens Model 107B sawed off pistol grip shot gun with 19" barrel. It was pretty well done for a homemade job. I know I know....

So I get the thing home from NC and shot it and it jams. I take the guts out of it and can't get it to open. Set it aside and totally forget about it. 20 years later my step-dad stops by and asks if I remember the gun then pulls it out of the truck.

I know more about firearms today than then so I popped the pins our and she pops open. Turns out I shot a 3 1/4" shell in a 2 3/4" gun. 3 1/4"? Really? That blew my mind, didn't know they even made those.

So I'm toying with the idea of putting it back together. He said I still have some stuff in the basement so I am hoping the parts are there. If not, anybody have an old wall hanger around they want to git rid of?

You be wise to dispose of the shotgun and delete this thread. If the overall length is less than 26" you are in posession of an unregistered Class 3 weapon due to modifying it's original configuration.

That's interesting, I was not aware of that. The overall lenght is over 26". As it stands right now I have nothing more than a paper weight or a club. I would have deleted the thread as you suggested but cannot since you responded to it.

I did shoot it a few times before it "broke". I figured out that it was best to wear a leather glove because of the recoil and the damage that the top snap can do the webbing between your fore finger and thumb. It is by no means practical but is definitely a conversation stopper...

As long as your barrel length is over 18 it is legal in TN.

I have never read about a overall length on a shotgun,a 16" barrel on a rifle & a 18" on a shotgun, reckon the mossburgs with the pistol grip are illeagle?

Not even 12 months ago I bought a Mossberg pistol grip with an 18 1/4 inch barrel with out filling out class 3 pprwrk. Walked right in and bought it that day. It is measured off barrel length only... in TN anyway.

If the over all length is shorter than 26" it is illegal in all states. That is a federal law not state.

The Mossbergs are longer than 26" overall. Measured from tip of barrel to back of pistol grip.

Alright here is question for ya... Why is the judge pistol allowed to have shotgun shells but not be considered a class 3? This is a serious question we were debating in the office today?

But seriously think about it you can have a pistol with 410 shells but you can't have a sawed of barrel under 18 in or it is a class 3? What really is the difference?

This is just my thinking but because it's sold as a pistol.Put a buttstock on it,then it would become illegal.Same thing with the AR and AK pistols.

If it has a rifled barrel it is either classifieds as a rifle or pistol. If it is a smooth bore it is a shotgun.

AOW IS NOT:
1) a pistol or revolver having a rifled bore, or rifled bores,
2) weapons designed, made or intended to be fired from the shoulder
3) and not capable of firing fixed ammunition. (this clause rules out various black powder weapons)

So your saying that a Mossburg pistol grip with 18 1/4 inch barrel is ileagal but they don't have to class 3 the sale??

the Mossberg is legal as a shotgun,,because it has over an 18 inch bbl and is over 26 inches total,,
