Two CVA questions

1). Anyone ever bought a Wolf and been disappointed? I know several people on here shoot them and like them - I'm just looking to see if anyone wants to play devil's advocate. I sold my MZ last year and never did replace it. Now I'm on a fairly tight budget and can't decide whether to get the Wolf or not. I already have a scope, so I won't spend any more on that.

2). Anyone shoot BH209 out of a Wolf or Optima with the standard breech plug? What's the difference in the BH209 plug and the standard one? I've always shot BH208, but if I have to drop another $35 on a different breech plug, I need to factor that in.

I'm kind of in the same boat, and have neither the Wolf, nor the Optima. After comparing the two, I'm not sure I'd be happy with the Wolf's stock fit once I put a scope on the gun.

That's kind of what I was thinking. In reality, I'll be lucky if I even hunt a half dozen times during MZ season, so I'm not itching to spend a bunch of money on one. On the other hand, I don't really want to buy something that I'll be disappointed with and looking to sell after the season ends.

Carbon build up with BH209 is a problem and the breech plug needs special tools for cleaning, basically a set of drill bits of proper size. You can get by with the factory plug for a little while but it's eventually going to plug up on you.

And no I don't know anyone that has ever been disappointed in a Wolf or a Optima, Get the SS though, you won't be sorry,

You MIGHT be able to get by with Mag primers, a 3mm drill bit for cleaning the flash channel AND the cheap $5 shim kit for the firing pin bushing. I don't recommend it though. The Western Powders plug is far better than the OEM breach plug for igniting Blackhorn209.

A wolf, for the price, cant be beat. Bought my wife one about 4 years ago and loaded it with 2 50gr pyro pellets and a 250gr powerbelt hollow point. Shooting it went like this at 50 yards - one shot adjust, 2nd shot adjust, 3rd shot money, 4th and 5th shot touching 3rd. 6th shot = spike with no heart and lungs. If we both didn't switch to Knights, the wolf would still be killing.

As far as BH209 goes cant say, not a fan of it. I have only killed 1 over 100 yards and 2 over 90 all the rest have been 60 and under so for muzzleloader spending the money on the latest and greatest as some say aint worth it when the tried and true still works just fine. With that being said if you are looking at taking shots at long distance then spend the money for just that. If shots in reality are 100 yards and less with more than likely it being 60 yards or less cant beat a wolf with 100gr of pyro.

I love my wolf and for $167 they can't be beat. I shoot 90 grains of blackhorn 209 with a 185 grain C.O.P. Bullet with a short black harvester sabot, will absolutely drive a tack. And the blackhorn breechplug is $19 at Dunhams, well worth the money.

Shop around although this time of year the best deals might be few and far between. Ive seen the Optima V2 in SS go for around $229. After season sales ive seen them closer to $200. If you can find a Wolf in SS for well under $200, sure but they are closer to $245 at many places now. muzzle-loader.com has the Optima V2 SS for $260. Its worth the additional $16.

I don't have a Wolf but have shot a couple and they'll get the job done. I know they're at the lower end of the CVA products and to me it felt like a cheap gun, but again that's me and I'm comparing it to my Encore which is way more money now days.

ive hunted with a wolf for some years now and love it.scope not a issue and the shortness of the gun is ideal for close quarters in ground blind.i shoot loose 90 grains and have it set 2" at 50.ive never had a shot over 50 yards due to thickets i hunt but never have had a issue with period, to date.it did not like pellets for accuracy for me.tested numerous times with different loads.shooting 150 grain,three pellets i never could get consistant accuracy.

150 grains IMO, is to much powder. My wolf likes 90 grains of blackhorn and when I shot triple7 it like 100 grains, or two pellets.

Its a lower cost rifle but can be a life time rifle if you do your part in normal maintenance and keep her clean.

They shoot tight and tight too just like all the other cva rifles ive shot in the past. As with anything, if you dont do your part, it will only be as accurate as the time and knowledge you put behind it.

i bought the Wolf before it was the Wolf. New frontier released the Beartooth Magnum. Used it for several years. Had no issues. with it. I put fiber optic sites on it and see-thru mounts.
Been sitting in the safe for at least 5 years unused. I would let it go for $75.

Then I found black/stainless Accura V2 for sale on Armslist. I made the guy an offer, and he accepted. I picked it up today for what I thought was a pretty good deal! The Accura wasn't even on my list, but I wasn't going to pass this one up for the price.

Good deal. Congrats. My parents are in town visiting and I dropped a couple hints. Mom bought the last blued Wolf our Walmart had and told me Happy Birthday (next month) and Merry Christmas! I'm very blessed and think I'll be very happy with this little rifle.

Yep. Found a Breechplug for BH on Amazon Prime for $25 I need to go ahead and order. Good luck with yours but I don't think you'll need any. Lol. Those Accuras are some nice guns!
