Turnip Greens

Do deer like them or no? I have heard farmers say they cant keep the deer out of their gardens of turnip greens and then i have heard a few hunters say they have made food plots of them and deer never touched them. Whats yalls thoughts or experiances?

Had deer walk over them and had them come for miles. Just depends on what they have ataste for in the area.
I personally like rape the best. Deer like any greens better when they have had a couple of freezes on them.

dont know i have never used biologic, i have actually never used anything other than crimson clover and corn. thanks for the answers though ;)

Deer love turnips and will eat them to the ground. I would recommend 7 top over purple since the 7 top dont produce a turnip and that allows more production out of the leaves....i have seen them pull up the turnip and eat it leaves, turnips and all.

generally I see a less than acceptable show on greens...

I found a harvest product, called prograze hot shot or something like that. It has clover, turn ups, and rapes in it. I just planted it and am excited about hunting over it. Has anyone used this?

anyway, it should be good if it has everything in it.

Ive never had much luck with the deer actually using turnip plots here. Seems what works the best here is winter peas,clover and oats. The deer will actually devour the peas to the ground if youve got a smaller plot. We done about 2 acres of winter peas,oats and clover last year and had the best results weve ever had on the deer actually using the plots. Dont waste your money on the big name premixed food plot bags. Just mix your own and it will be easier on your wallet. Im doubling the size of our pea and oat plots this year.......the way the acorn crop is looking here...theyre gonna need it! ;)

Ive planted them in areas and have video of a 130 class 8 point pulling one up and eating them and numerous deer eating them. I have also planted them in certain areas and the deer never touch them. Its all trial and error.

I have had them tear them up, DER as well and DER is cheaper.

DER is a great product because it is one of the few rapes that are attractive early in the season. Most rapes, kales, turnips don't get "tasty" to deer until after the first freeze. However, DER seems highly attractive from day one.

My experience is turnips, kale and rapes were low on the preference list depending on what else is available and the local herd size.

Planted Plot Shot brassicas (rape & turnip) the last two years and deer tore them up after they had a frost on them. You can get them at Walmart. Would recommend getting them planted by the third week in August to have a good stand.

Standard fall-season planting--late August through early October. Can be (and should be) mixed with other fall annuals.

I tend to plant mine in mid to late September. I try to time it so I have the plots worked up by the second weekend in Sept, and then plant when there is a pretty sure chance of rain within a few days. Of course, it doesn't always work out like that, but that is my goal.

Sometimes you can get "old" seed (seed they might have left over from the previous year) from the coop or county feed store for less than half price, and I find that germination is almost as good as "fresh" seed. I do overseed by about 25%, so that cuts into the savings, but you still end up saving a little bit. Last year I planted a mix of purple top turnips, mustard greens, DER, and oats in a one acre plot, and the deer seemed to like the variety of greens. The turnip and mustard green seed was from the previous year and it still made a nice thick plot (until the deer decimated it in December).

I planted purple turnips and after they got through eating all of the leaves they dug up the turnips and eat them all the way up into jan. How far up into the winter does 7 Top last
