Turkey Decoy Recommendations

Looks like you joined this site eleven years ago. If you come here often, you will see that most guys here are opposed to turkey decoys.

If you are new to turkey hunting and just trying to increase your odds of success, I understand. I would encourage you to not let decoys become a crutch. I have no idea which decoys are better than any other. Just know that it's possible that this thread may turn a different direction than you anticipated because turkey hunting purest. Good luck in your pursuit this spring.
 
There are tons of threads on this topic but Avian X makes a pretty realistic looking one as do most of the others. IMO,it's all about the setup regardless if you are using a deek or not. Sure it can help take the focus off of you but that's not always the case. Trial and error and see what works for you.

Secondly,Who cares what anyone else thinks or does…about anything ESPECIALLY hunting. They don't pay your bills,taxes,feed your family and such. You hunt the way you want to hunt. If you want to use a deek then by all means,go for it. If you don't,then don't but to be bullied or peer pressured to do either would be foolish and weak. Their opinions don't matter on any other subject in your life so don't let it make a flip in your choices on how to hunt either.

Ill refrain from my personal opinion on them but id be a liar if I said I have never used them before....

so just to answer your question, Avian X and DSD (Dave Smith Decoys) are generally considered to be the best however they also cost a lot. Not sure if HS Stut or primos still make the foam foldable ones but in the right situation those should work just fine and cost a lot less.

This 1000%.

The KEY to turkey hunting is the setup. You don't have to be a great caller, you don't even have to be a good caller.

EVERY time you set up, you want the bird to not be able to see where you are until he is in gun range. Topography is best, but underbrush can be almost as effective. If you strike a responsive bird in the mood, he WILL come in to see where the call is coming from. Just be sure when he can see where you are calling from, you can also see/ shoot him.

Sunday morn I did just that with a friend on his private ground. I struck a bird 400y away across a powerline, didn't want to get in the open, so I set us up in some thick stuff 75 y off the powerline. I had that tom gobbling his head off at 25 yards, but friend felt it was too thick to shoot. I guess the bird also thought it was too thick to see the hen (me), so he just kept coming, and coming, and coming. He gobbled his last time at us at 15 yards flanking, but my buddy had not adjusted for the position change. Ole tom pegged my buddy at 15 yards before he could shoot (facepalm!). Still was a GREAT hunt, and all because of the setup.
 
The best advice I can give you, is learn to hunt turkeys first before relying on decoys. You'll learn a ton, and take some beatings but trust me it's worth it in the long run. Resorting to decoys will result in faster success but at the expense learning the birds and the game.

might as well chime in and share a story. MANY years ago a friend and I were at a LGS. they had of all things, hen turkey decoys. we had never seen one before so we both bought one each for $14.99 plus tax. my friend couldn't wait to use his and as soon as season come in off he went to give'er a whirl. he sat up in the corner of a field with his brand spanking new hen decoy out in the grass. when daylight was breaking he had gobblers sounding off in a couple different directions, so the hunt was on. after it was full light and the gobbling and calling was getting hot he heard a KA BOOM and his brand spanking new hen decoy was spinning on the stick while he heard another KA BOOM. he started yelling (I'm sure a few choice words) at the guy who yelled back and actually walked over to him. not only is shooting hens VOODOOO but trespassing isn't good either. the guy apologized all over himself and promised he'd never be back or never shoot at a hen again. well, that wasn't good enough for my friend who also made the guy promise to never again carry a rifle in the spring woods. I don't think my friend has ever carried a decoy since but I am guilty of trying them several years ago and the result didn't warrant the hassle of dragging them around.
