This is my "Other" place. In Morgan County, high deer density area but also high hunter density, people actually hunt the properties around me here lol Much different than what Im used too, but it was a no brainer deal so I bought it. 55 acres, all mature oak hardwoods, absolutely wide open, I can see 200 yards in many places now. I havent been able to do anything just yet to improve it like I have on my place in Fentress. Im waiting til the timber is cut and will have to wait for timber prices to go back up, but Im trying to get a plan until then.
My number limiting factor is obviously cover, as you can see, Im surrounded by cover though. I just have to hope when I add cover, deer will come to my cover because the surrounding properties will have more pressure. The green I have marked is potential areas that can be cleared, thats all I have that is feasible to clear(flat without rocks everywhere). I really want to clear at least 3 small areas for Fall plots. But as you can see, only 2 areas are located away from property lines. There is a hunting lease on the North pine side and hunting goes on across the RR tracks.
This place is actually good as it is, I killed a buck and 2 does here this year and my brother got a doe. I saw ALOT more deer here than what Im used too seeing. However, deer basically abandoned the place during gun season because there is no cover. I had one problem with trespassers, that was a guy riding his truck right thru the place tearing the trails all to heck during this last juvenile hunt, with his girl holding the rifle out the window :D I dont even have a gate yet,just signs, didnt really want to do it until logging was done but I guess I better soon.
Ive never had to worry about being to close to property lines before and have never hunted any place that even had a house in the same area I was in, but as you can see, I have houses close here. Thankfully the neighbor by my entrance is a great guy but I dont know about the others. I thought about flipping the property for a pretty nice profit but I had alot of fun bowhunting this place, so many more deer over there, just not quite the size Im used to.
I would like to hear others suggestions as to where to locate cover and food plots and what not. Always good to get different perspectives. The 2nd pic is a zoomed out pic where I marked the most major areas that deer use to enter or leave the property. Last pic is a 3D lay of the land view with elevation exaggerated.
