So, I persisted and set up halfway between the two spots I'd been hunting all week. Figured I'd split the distance and get a shot at any bird that came up either side. At 6:10 (yes, that early) had two hens come out of the hollow to my left and head up the ridge. 15 minutes later I had two more come up the same way. 15 minutes after that, I had two more come up to my right. All were within 20 yards, all were fully at ease, and none ever saw me. Unfortunately, not a single gobbler was in tow. As a matter of fact, this is the first morning I've not heard a gobble anywhere, where every other morning I've heard four to six birds gobbling from the roost around this hollow. None of the gobblers I've seen this week were spooked (except the one I laid down last week), so I can only attribute the quietness today to the falling temps and pending rain/snow today/tomorrow. To top it off, while I'm on stand, my wife sends me pictures of two hens in my front yard, which is only a 10 minute walk away... No gobbler was with them, either. After leaving this area, I headed up to the mountaintop on the back side of my property. There I came over a ridge and watched a lone hen at 30 yards work its way slowly down the other side of the mountain. No gobbler in tow, either. Talley - 9 hens seen, no gobblers seen or heard. On the "cool" scale of things, I did have a bobcat come in to my yelps. I was sitting on the edge of the aforementioned hollow and heard something behind me. I slowly turned and saw the butt end of an animal disappear behind a big oak about 7 yards behind me. Slowly a curious head appeared on the opposite side of the tree. As I fiddled with my phone camera while trying to minimize movement, it began to stalk straight towards me. I guess I moved too much, cause when I glanced away to check my phone, it disappeared behind the tree, not to be seen again. Overall very good day, but no gobblers! Hoping next week will be better.
